Chapter 1 - THE WAR COUNCIL

Robert didn't touch Chloe at first. He remained on his knees by the sofa, his massive hands hovering inches above her bruised arms as if he were afraid his touch might shatter what was left of her.

His eyes scanned the torn back of her wedding gown, the deep violet swellings blooming across her ribs, and the distinct, hand-shaped welts marking her face.

"Who did this, Chloe?" Robert’s voice wasn't loud. It was a low, guttural rasp—a sound pulled from the darkest depths of a father's grief.

"Victoria," Chloe sobbed, burying her face in her father's shoulder as he finally pulled her into a fierce, protective embrace. "And six other women... Lewis stood outside the hotel door, Dad. He told her not to hit my face too much."

Robert closed his eyes. I watched his jaw clench so hard a muscle beneath his cheek quivered. When he opened his eyes again, the tired, distant man who had walked out of our lives a decade ago was gone. In his place stood the ruthless real estate mogul who had carved out an empire in South Florida.

"Sarah," Robert said, turning his head toward me without releasing Chloe. "Call Dr. Harrison. Tell him to bring a forensic medical team directly to this apartment. No emergency rooms yet—we do not let the Dudley family know where she is until we have every injury cataloged under chain-of-custody protocols."

"Already done," I said, holding up my phone. "Dr. Harrison is twenty minutes away. I also called Marcus."

A dark, dangerous smile touched the corner of Robert’s lips. Marcus Vance was his chief of security—a former military intelligence commander who handled corporate espionage and asset protection for Robert’s firm.

"Good," Robert whispered. He smoothed Chloe’s matted hair back from her forehead. "Listen to me, Chloe. You are never going back to that hotel. You are never looking at Lewis Dudley again. Tonight, the Dudley family made the greatest mistake of their lives."

Twenty minutes later, Dr. Harrison arrived with two certified forensic nurses. For two agonizing hours, they treated Chloe’s wounds, administered pain relief, and systematically photographed every single bruise, tear, and drop of dried blood on her wedding gown. Each image was logged with digital timestamps and metadata.

While the medical team worked in the bedroom, Marcus Vance stepped into my living room, carrying a heavy encrypted laptop.

"Boss," Marcus said, nodding to Robert and then to me. "We ran a full background sweep on Victoria Dudley and Lewis Dudley the moment Mrs. Keane called. They aren't who they claim to be."

Robert leaned against the kitchen counter, crossing his arms. "Explain."

"Lewis Dudley’s law firm is a front," Marcus revealed, turning the laptop screen toward us. "He’s deeply in debt to offshore creditors—over three million dollars from failed luxury hotel investments in the Bahamas. Victoria Dudley’s 'socialite status' is held together by forged equity lines on property they don't even own. They needed Chloe’s $1.8 million condo not as a family residence, but as liquid collateral to stop an international fraud indictment slated for next month."

I covered my mouth in shock. "They didn't just want her property... they targeted her."

"They set a trap," Robert spat out, his eyes flashing like flint. "They thought because Sarah and I were divorced, Chloe was unprotected. They thought a isolated girl with no father in the picture would bend under physical terror and hand over her deed."

Robert turned to Marcus, his voice dropping into absolute command.

"Block all access to Chloe's condo immediately. Put armed guards on the perimeter. And Marcus?"

"Sir?"

"Find out where Victoria Dudley and her son are right now."

Marcus checked his phone. "They’re at the Grand Plaza Hotel penthouse, celebrating what they think is a successful intimidation tactic. Lewis just posted a photo on social media claiming his new bride is 'resting after the excitement.'"

Robert looked at me, then down at his hands. "Let them celebrate. Tomorrow morning, their celebration turns into a execution."
