Chapter 2 - The Billionaire's Arrival

The thundering whine of the helicopter rotors slowly began to spool down, but the heavy tension in the ballroom only grew thicker.

"Harrison Global?" Natasha repeated, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Dad, what are you talking about?"

Kenneth didn't answer her. He was practically hyperventilating, wiping cold sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. "William Harrison... The William Harrison! The tech titan! He controls sixty percent of our commercial real estate financing! If he's here..."

The heavy double glass doors leading to the helipad opened. Four hulking men in crisp, dark tactical suits stepped into the room first, rapidly clearing a wide path through the stunned crowd of 200 guests.

And then, stepping through the doorway with absolute, terrifying authority, was my father.

William Harrison looked every bit the $8.5 billion mogul he was. Dressed in a bespoke charcoal-grey suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly styled, his cold blue eyes swept across the ballroom like a searchlight. Flanking his left side was Howard, his loyal chief of staff, holding an encrypted tablet. Flanking his right were two top corporate litigators from the world's most aggressive law firm.

Clarissa’s eyes went wide, instantly transforming from an arrogant tyrant into a groveling socialite. She pushed past Brandon and rushed toward the entrance, putting on her most dazzling, fake smile.

"Mr. Harrison!" Clarissa exclaimed, her voice dripping with desperation. "What an extraordinary honor! We had no idea you would grace the Hayes Annual Gala with your presence! Please, allow my husband Kenneth and me to escort you to the VIP head table—"

My father didn't even look at her. He walked right past her outstretched hand as if she were made of air, his polished leather shoes clicking loudly against the marble.

Kenneth stepped forward next, bowing slightly, his voice trembling. "Mr. Harrison, sir! I am Kenneth Hayes, CEO of Hayes Real Estate. If I had known you were attending, we would have prepared a formal reception—"

William Harrison didn't stop. He pushed right past Kenneth, his face set in a terrifying mask of thunderous fury.

His sharp eyes scanned the crowd until they landed on the center of the room.

There I stood. My yellow dress torn down the side, stained with dark red wine, blood trickling down my cheek from the fresh cut, clutching myself in the middle of a circle of mocking strangers.

When my father saw me, the cold, ruthless billionaire facade cracked wide open. A look of agonizing, visceral pain swept across his face.

"Emma..." he breathed.

The room held its breath.

William rushed forward, stepping between the stunned guests. He reached me in three long strides, instantly pulling off his heavy black cashmere coat and wrapping it tenderly around my cold, shivering shoulders. He pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly against his chest as if I were five years old again.

"Oh, my sweet girl," my father whispered, his voice thick with emotion, his hand gently patting my head. "My little girl... what have they done to you?"

I buried my face into his shoulder, the tears finally flowing freely. "Dad..."

Clarissa, Kenneth, Brandon, and Natasha stood completely frozen, staring at the scene in utter, paralyzed disbelief.

"Dad?" Natasha blurted out, her voice squeaking. "Did she just call him... Dad?"

Howard, my father's chief of staff, stepped forward, his expression cold as steel as he looked directly at the Hayes family.

"Allow me to introduce Miss Emma Harrison," Howard announced, his voice echoing clearly across the dead-silent ballroom. "Sole heiress to the Harrison Global Empire, Vice Chair of the Harrison Foundation, and daughter of William Harrison."

The revelation hit the room like a nuclear detonation.

A collective, violent gasp erupted from the 200 guests. People choked on their drinks. Women covered their mouths in horror.

Clarissa’s face turned an ashen, ghastly white. Her knees buckled so violently that Kenneth had to catch her by the arm to keep her from collapsing onto the floor.

"H-Harrison?" Clarissa stammered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "No... no, that's impossible! She's Emma Cooper! She's a freelance designer! She drives a ten-year-old hatchback! She's poor!"

My father slowly turned around. He kept one arm firmly around my shoulders, shielding me against his side, while his eyes locked onto Clarissa with a lethal, predatory intensity.

"My daughter chose to live simply because she wanted to see if there were genuine people left in this wretched world," William said, his voice quiet, low, and terrifyingly calm. "She wanted to see if someone could love her for her heart, not her bank account. And instead... she stumbled into a pit of poisonous vipers."

Brandon looked as if he had been struck by lightning. He took a terrified step forward, his eyes wide, trembling from head to toe.

"E-Emma..." Brandon whimpered, his voice cracking. "Emma... you're... you're a Harrison?"

May you like

I looked at Brandon from beneath my father's coat. The man I thought I loved looked so small, so pathetic, so spineless.

"Yes, Brandon," I said softly, wiping a tear from my eye. "I'm Emma Harrison. And this was the test."
