Chapter 2 - The Breach at the Estate

The Ashford estate, usually a sanctuary of pristine brick and rolling green lawns, looked like a war zone. Six police cruisers blocked the entrance to the cul-de-sac, their red and blue lights painting the neighborhood in a chaotic glow. Behind them, two unmarked black SUVs belonging to Ashford Global Security stood idle, doors open, heavily armed men in tactical gear coordinating with the local police sergeant.

Inside the house, the atmosphere was thick with a bizarre, celebratory madness. Natalie stood in the kitchen, pouring a glass of expensive wine, while her sister Courtney laughed hysterically, rewinding the video on Natalie's phone.

"Look at her face!" Courtney wheezed, pointing at the screen. "She actually thought someone was going to save her. Aaron thinks he controls everything, but he can't save his precious little princess now."

In the basement, Emma sat huddled in the corner of a cold, concrete utility room. Her pajama pants were damp with the liquid Paige had poured on her—not gasoline, but a highly flammable industrial solvent Paige had stolen from her boyfriend’s auto-shop. Patricia stood over the little girl, a heavy wooden paddle in her hand, her face contorted in a mask of multi-generational bitter hatred.

"Your father thinks he's a god," Patricia hissed, tapping the paddle against her palm. "He thinks because he throws money at us, we should bow down to him. He cut off my credit cards last week. He told Natalie she needed a budget. A budget! To a Grant! We built this town before his father ever made a dime."

"I want my daddy," Emma sobbed, pulling her knees tightly to her chest. "Please, Grandma, stop. It hurts."

"Don't call me Grandma, you little brat. You have his blood," Patricia spat.

Upstairs, the front door suddenly shivered under a massive impact.

“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR! WE HAVE A WARRANT FOR FELONY ASSAULT AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT!”

Natalie dropped her wine glass. It shattered on the marble tile, dark red liquid pooling like blood. "What? No, that’s impossible. Aaron is in the air. He’s over the Rockies right now!"

Before Paige could reach the deadbolt, the door exploded inward. The heavy oak frame splintered as three tactical officers crashed through, shields raised, rifles drawn. Behind them, Jordan Blake stepped into the foyer, his face a mask of absolute authority.

"Drop to the ground! Now! Hands behind your head!" the lead officer screamed.

Brianna and Courtney immediately shrieked, throwing themselves onto the floor, but Natalie stood paralyzed. "Do you know who I am? This is my house! You can't be here!"

"Natalie Ashford, you are under arrest," Jordan said coldly, nodding to an officer who immediately tackled Natalie to the ground, pulling her arms behind her back with a harsh plastic zip-tie. "Where is Emma?"

"I don't know what you're talking about! We were just playing a game!" Natalie yelled, her face pressed against the cold floor.

From the basement stairs, a sharp, terrifying sound echoed—the distinct click of a heavy Zippo lighter.

Jordan didn't wait for the police. He drew his sidearm and sprinted toward the basement door, kicking it off its hinges.
