Chapter 5 - The Trial of the Century
Six months later, the courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. The media had dubbed it the "Ashford House of Horrors" trial. Natalie, Patricia, Paige, Brianna, and Courtney sat at the defense table, looking vastly different from the glamorous, arrogant women they had been half a year ago. Dressed in orange jail jumpsuits, their hair unstyled and faces pale, they looked terrified.
The prosecution’s star witness was the digital evidence. The courtroom was dead silent as the large screens played the doorbell camera footage. The sound of Emma’s screams echoed through the mahogany room, causing several jurors to gasp and cover their mouths. The camera then panned to Natalie, smiling and holding her phone, while Courtney laughed so hard she cried.
Aaron sat in the front row of the gallery, his arm around Mrs. Rivera, who had testified beautifully about the pattern of emotional abuse she had witnessed whenever Aaron was away on business.
Natalie’s defense attorney tried desperately to frame the incident as a misunderstanding, a "disciplinary method gone wrong" under the influence of an overbearing matriarch, Patricia.
But then, the prosecution introduced the final piece of evidence: the text messages recovered from the sisters' group chat, titled "The Takeover."
Natalie: "Aaron is flying to Seattle today. We have three days. Mom says if we make the kid scared enough, she’ll tell the judge she wants to live with me permanently so Aaron has to pay out the full alimony settlement." Paige: "I’ll bring the chemical wash. We can tell her it’s gas. That’ll shut her up." Courtney: "Can’t wait to see Aaron’s face when he loses his kid and his money."
The defense table collapsed into chaotic weeping. Natalie covered her face, realizing there was no way out. The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
"On the charge of conspiracy to commit aggravated child abuse, how do you find?" the judge asked.
"Guilty," the foreperson announced clearly.
The word repeated like a hammer blow for every single count. Conspiracy, extortion, assault, and reckless endangerment.

When it came time for sentencing, the judge did not hold back. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen such a depraved indifference to human life and parental duty. That you would torture an innocent eight-year-old child to extort her father is monstrous."
Patricia Grant was sentenced to twenty-five years without parole. Natalie was sentenced to twenty years. The remaining three sisters received fifteen years each for their active participation and conspiracy. As they were led away in chains, weeping and screaming for mercy, Aaron didn't even look at them. He stood up, buttoned his suit jacket, and walked out into the sunlight.
