Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The entire boardroom exploded into chaos.
Reporters leaped from their chairs, camera flashes creating a blinding storm of white light as two board members fainted outright.
Celina let out a blood-curdling shriek, knocking her champagne flute off the table, shattering it against the floor as she backed away from Ross as if seeing a ghost risen from the depths of hell.
"R-Ross...?" Gavin whispered, his knees shaking so violently he almost collapsed onto the mahogany table. "You... you died in the crash... the police confirmed..."
"The police commissioner is a personal friend of mine, Gavin," Ross said calmly, stepping alongside me, resting his hand proudly on my shoulder. "Did you really think a man who built an international conglomerate over thirty years wouldn't notice his own son-in-law buying remote signal detonators on the dark web?"
Gavin’s face drained of every drop of color. "Detonators? I... I don't know what you're talking about!"
"We have the wire transfers, Gavin," I interjected, pulling up a second document on the main screen. "You transferred two hundred thousand dollars from Summit’s slush fund to an offshore account registered to a disgraced former mechanic in New Jersey. The FBI arrested him three hours ago. He has already signed a full confession implicating you in the attempted murder of Ross Albright."
Three federal agents in dark blue jackets stepped into the boardroom, accompanied by officers from the NYPD.
"Gavin Barrett," the lead federal agent announced, stepping up to the trembling man. "You are under arrest for attempted capital murder, corporate fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."
"No! Wait! It was Marcus Vance!" Gavin screamed hysterically as the metal handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. He reached out desperately toward his mother. "Mom! Call the lawyers! Call Vance! Tell them to release the bail money!"
"I'm afraid your mother won't be calling anyone, Gavin," I said softly, looking over at Celina, who was currently cowering against the wall.
Jonathan Vance stepped toward Celina, pulling out a secondary police warrant. "Celina Barrett, you are under arrest as an accessory to corporate fraud, grand larceny, and the physical assault of Clara Albright."
"Assault?!" Celina shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. "I didn't touch her!"
"We recovered the security footage from the mansion foyer, Celina," I reminded her coldly, walking over to her. I reached out my hand, grabbed the pearl necklace around her neck, and pulled it free with a sharp snap, holding the gems safely in my palm. "My mother’s pearls look much better on me anyway."
As the police dragged a screaming Celina and a sobbing, hyperventilating Gavin out of the boardroom in front of fifty flashing news cameras, the remaining board members stood up, erupting into a roaring ovation for my father and me.
Gavin looked back over his shoulder at me one last time, his eyes wide with absolute, pathetic horror.

I raised my crystal glass of water toward him, mimicking the exact mocking toast he had given me in the rain twelve hours ago.
"Enjoy prison, Gavin," I whispered.
