Chapter 3 - The Audit

At 7:00 AM the following morning, while my grandmother was being wheeled into the operating room for her six-hour open-heart surgery, I sat in the high-rise conference room of Vance & Associates on the thirty-fourth floor of downtown Chicago.
I was no longer wearing lace or pearls.
I wore a sharp, tailored charcoal suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail, a steaming cup of black coffee sitting beside a mountain of printed financial ledgers.
Beside me sat Arthur Vance, the sixty-year-old senior managing partner of the firm—a man known in the corporate world as the "Bloodhound of Wall Street."
Arthur flipped through a stack of bank statements I had printed at 3:00 AM, his thick silver eyebrows rising higher with every page.
"Claire," Arthur said, setting down his gold pen. "Are you absolutely certain these numbers are accurate?"
"I audited the secondary accounts myself three times before dawn, Mr. Vance," I replied, my tone crisp and professional. "Ethan’s logistics company, Northstar Freight, was granted a two-million-dollar small business expansion loan from the state three months ago based on projected revenue filings."
"And those filings?" Arthur asked.
"Forged," I stated flatly. "Ethan used Chloe’s father, Richard Sterling, to create fake invoices from Sterling’s international import firm. They inflated Northstar's revenue by three hundred percent to secure the loan. Once the two million hit Ethan’s corporate account, he immediately transferred four hundred thousand dollars into a private trust account in the Cayman Islands under Chloe Sterling's name."
Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, letting out a low whistle. "It’s a classic kickback scheme. He used state loan money to buy his way into the Sterling family's inner circle."
"Exactly," I said. "And because Ethan was too arrogant to hire an independent accountant, he registered me as the official tax agent of record on his state filing portal."
Arthur looked at me, his eyes sharp and calculating. "Which means if the state does a routine audit six months from now, your signature would have been on those fraudulent documents. He was setting you up to take the fall if the federal investigators ever caught wind of it."
My blood ran cold, but my hands remained entirely steady on the table.
He hadn't just humiliated me at the altar. He had built a financial trap that would have destroyed my career, stripped me of my CPA license, and sent me to a federal prison while he and Chloe enjoyed their stolen fortune in the tropics.
"What do you want to do, Claire?" Arthur asked softly. "You're our best auditor. If you give me the word, I can hand this file directly to the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division by noon."
I looked at my watch. It was 7:45 AM.
In fifteen minutes, Ethan would be waking up at the Regency Hotel, likely nursing a hangover from the party he had insisted on continuing with Chloe after I left.
"Not yet," I said, a cold, ruthless smile touching my lips. "If you hand it to the State Attorney General now, it’ll take six months of grand jury indictments before they seize his assets. I want him ruined today."
"How?" Arthur asked, intrigued.
"Ethan’s primary corporate loan requires a mandatory liquidity covenant," I explained, pulling a second contract from my folder. "If his corporate liquid capital drops below fifty thousand dollars at any time, the bank has the automatic right to recall the entire two-million-dollar loan within twenty-four hours. And because I am still listed as his primary power-of-attorney on his business accounts..."
Arthur’s eyes lit up with deep, dark amusement. "You're going to freeze his secondary accounts."
"I'm going to do better than that," I said. "I'm going to execute the legal separation agreement we signed when we purchased our joint condo six months ago."
At 9:30 AM, Ethan was lying on the plush velvet sofa in the presidential suite of the Regency Hotel, a ice pack pressed against his forehead, a half-empty bottle of champagne sitting on the coffee table.
Chloe was sitting at the vanity, trying on a diamond necklace her father had bought her, humming a cheerful tune.
Suddenly, Ethan’s phone began to ring incessantly.
He groaned, reaching for the device on the glass table. "Who the hell is calling at this hour?"
He looked at the screen. It was his chief loan officer at First National Bank.
Ethan smoothed his hair, sitting up, adjusting his voice to sound professional. "Hello, Marcus! Good morning. Just taking a little rest after the wedding festivities—"
"Ethan, where the hell are you?!" Marcus’s frantic voice exploded through the phone speaker, loud enough for Chloe to turn around from the mirror.
Ethan blinked, startled. "What? What are you talking about?"
"Your corporate accounts!" Marcus barked. "We just received a formal legal notification from Vance & Associates executing a court-ordered asset freeze on your primary commercial account!"
Ethan dropped the ice pack to the floor. "What?! What asset freeze?! On whose authority?!"
"Claire Sterling—formerly Claire Evans!" Marcus snapped. "She filed a verified affidavit thirty minutes ago demonstrating that four hundred thousand dollars of co-mingled home-buyer funds were illegally transferred into an offshore trust without her consent! The court placed an immediate freeze on all connected accounts pending a full forensic review!"
Ethan felt a cold drop of sweat slide down his neck. "No, no, no! That’s a mistake! Claire is my wife—well, my fiancé! She’s just throwing a tantrum because—"
"I don't give a damn about your wedding drama, Ethan!" Marcus roared. "Because your commercial account is frozen, your liquid capital balance just dropped to three thousand dollars! That triggers an automatic covenant default on your two-million-dollar expansion loan!"
"Wait! Marcus, please!" Ethan begged, jumping up from the sofa, his heart hammering in his chest like a jackhammer. "Give me forty-eight hours! I can talk to Claire! I can get her to sign the release!"
"You have until 2:00 PM today to deposit one million dollars into escrow to cover the default," Marcus said coldly. "If the funds aren't there by 2:00 PM, First National will initiate immediate asset seizure proceedings against Northstar Freight, your personal vehicles, and your luxury condo. Have a good day, Ethan."
The line went dead.
Ethan stood frozen in the middle of the luxury suite, his face drained of all color, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped his phone.
"Ethan?" Chloe asked, stepping away from the vanity, her brows furrowed in annoyance. "What’s going on? Who was that?"
Before Ethan could answer, his phone buzzed again. A text message popped up on his screen from an unknown number.
It was a simple PDF document, accompanied by a short message:
“Grandma’s surgery started at 6:00 AM. Your financial destruction started at 8:00 AM. See you at the office at noon, Ethan.”

Attached was the cover sheet of the federal fraud report I had just prepared for the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.
Ethan’s phone slipped from his fingers, crashing against the hardwood floor.
