Chapter 4 - The Collapse

By 1:00 PM, the rain outside the financial district had turned into a howling gale.

Inside the glass-walled lobby of Northstar Freight, absolute chaos had broken out.

Three moving trucks were parked outside in the loading dock, workers in gray uniforms hauling out executive desks, leather chairs, and computer servers. Two uniformed sheriff’s deputies stood at the front entrance, holding official court-ordered asset seizure notices.

Ethan burst through the glass doors, his suit rumpled, his tie crooked, his eyes wild with terror.

"Stop! Stop what you're doing!" Ethan roared at the moving crew, grabbing a monitor from a worker’s hands. "This is my company! You can't touch this equipment!"

"Step back, sir!" a sheriff’s deputy commanded, stepping between Ethan and the worker, resting a heavy hand on his tasers. "We are executing an emergency writ of attachment issued by the Cook County Circuit Court. All physical assets of Northstar Freight are being impounded to satisfy outstanding bank defaults."

"Where is she?!" Ethan screamed, looking around the chaotic office space. "Where is Claire?!"

"She’s in your corner office, Ethan," a cool, feminine voice called out from the glass mezzanine above.

Ethan looked up.

I was standing at the top of the metal staircase, wearing my sharp charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase. Beside me stood two federal investigators from the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit, their gold badges clipped to their belts.

Ethan took the stairs three at a time, stumbling twice, rushing toward me with his hands extended in desperate plea.

"Claire! Claire, please!" Ethan gasped, his voice cracking, tears of sheer panic welling in his eyes. "What are you doing?! Have you gone insane?! You're destroying everything I’ve worked for!"

I didn't step back. I didn't flinch. I stared at him with eyes as cold as granite.

"You destroyed it yourself, Ethan," I said, my voice cutting through the noise of the clearing office below. "The moment you used state loan funds to finance Chloe’s offshore trust."

Ethan froze, his face turning an ash-gray color. "You... you looked at the secondary ledgers?"

"I’m a senior forensic auditor, Ethan," I reminded him, my voice devoid of any emotion. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice four hundred thousand dollars moving through a shell company registered in Panama? Did you really think I was so stupid, so desperate for your love, that I would let you use my name on fraudulent state filings?"

"Claire, listen to me!" Ethan cried out, dropping to his knees right there on the carpeted floor of the hallway, grabbing the hem of my suit trousers. "I did it for us! I did it so we could be rich! Chloe’s father promised me an international shipping contract if I proved I had offshore liquidity! It was just a temporary arrangement! I was going to move the money back next month!"

"Just a temporary arrangement?" I echoed, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "Just like giving Chloe my wedding car was a temporary arrangement? Just like dropping my hand at the altar was a temporary arrangement?"

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" Ethan sobbed, wiping his bloody nose with his sleeve. "I was an idiot! I was blind! Chloe means nothing to me, Claire! She’s a snake! She left me an hour ago at the hotel as soon as she found out the accounts were frozen! She took her bags and blocked my number!"

I looked down at the man kneeling at my feet.

Ten years. Ten years of my youth, my devotion, my quiet endurance—wasted on a man who didn't even have the spine to stand up by himself when his fragile world of lies collapsed.

"She left you?" I asked softly. "How poetic."

"Claire, please," Ethan whimpered, reaching up to touch my hand. "We can fix this. I’ll sign the condo over to you. I’ll publicly apologize to your grandmother. I’ll crawl on my hands and knees to her hospital room! Just call off the federal investigators! Please, don't send me to prison!"

I leaned down, my face inches from his pale, trembling face.

"My grandmother went into cardiac arrest because of you, Ethan," I whispered, every word sharp as a razor blade. "She spent six hours on an operating table today while surgeons re-routed three clogged arteries in her heart. If she had died... I wouldn't be sending you to prison. I would have ended you myself."

I pulled my trousers out of his weak grip.

I looked at the two federal agents standing behind me. "Special Agent Miller, this is Ethan Vance. He is the sole managing director of Northstar Freight. All the fraudulent loan applications bear his primary electronic signature."

Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Ethan Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, state loan falsification, and illegal offshore tax evasion. You have the right to remain silent."

Click. Click.

The steel cuffs snapped around Ethan’s wrists.

Ethan let out a wail of pure despair as the agents yanked him up from the floor. "Claire! Claire, don't do this to me! Claire!"

I turned my back on him, picking up my briefcase from the table, and walked down the metal stairs without casting a single glance backward as he was led away in chains through the ruined lobby of his company.
