Chapter 2 - The Invitation to the TrapThe rest of the week moved with the tense, calculated precision of a military operation.

We kept up appearances. I went to work, smiled at my colleagues, and answered texts from Grace as if nothing was wrong. Behind the scenes, however, Alex and I met quietly with a forensic accountant recommended by a trusted friend in corporate law, as well as a senior detective who specialized in white-collar elder fraud and identity theft.
The detective took one look at the forged home equity documents and the security footage of Grace and Fiona trespassing and exploiting Teresa, and a slow grin spread across his face.
“You have them dead to rights on extortion, harassment, and grand larceny,” the detective said, sliding his notepad across the desk. “But if you want to make sure they can’t crawl out of this with a plea bargain, you need to catch them in the act of concealing the stolen funds. Where do they keep their physical ledger?”
“Mother’s house,” Alex replied immediately. “She keeps a fireproof safe in her study where she stores all the family trust physical certificates and notarized stamp pads.”
“Get us into that house during the gala on Saturday,” the detective instructed. “We’ll secure a rapid-execution search warrant based on the financial discrepancies and the video evidence of labor exploitation. But we need a clean entry to place a micro-tracker on the safe and confirm the physical documents are inside before the raid.”
That was where I came in.
On Saturday evening, the grand ballroom of the Bellweather Country Club glittered with crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne flutes, and the unmistakable hum of local aristocracy. Women in designer gowns and men in tailored tuxedos mingled beneath banners celebrating the ‘Worthington Community Foundation’—a charity front that Grace used to launder her social status.
Fiona spotted us near the entrance, her diamond earrings catching the light as she swept over with a bright, predatory smile.
“Alex! Maya! I’m so glad you made it,” Fiona trilled, air-kissing my cheek while her eyes darted toward the crowd to see who was watching. “Mother was worried you’d bail out at the last minute like you always do.”
“Wouldn't miss it, Fiona,” Alex said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth, though Fiona was too self-absorbed to notice. “In fact, we have a surprise for you later tonight.”
Fiona laughed dismissively. “Oh, please, as long as your surprise doesn't involve bringing that sluggish housekeeper of yours around. Honestly, Maya, I don't know how you put up with her. She tracked mud across my silk runner last week and looked at me like I was the criminal.”
My fingers curled into fists inside the fabric of my evening gown. I wanted to slap the smug expression right off her face. Instead, I smiled—a cold, sharp smile that finally made Fiona hesitate.
“Teresa is a wonderful woman, Fiona,” I replied softly. “And people who treat her poorly usually find out that karma has a very expensive invoice.”
Before Fiona could process the warning, Alex excused us to grab drinks. The moment we disappeared into the crowd, I slipped out through the side terrace doors into the damp night air, heading toward the parking lot where my car was parked.
My mission was simple: while the entire family was distracted hosting the gala across town, I had to drive to Grace’s empty estate, use the spare key we secretly copied from her keyring, slip inside her study, and let the detective's tech specialist in through the back window to plant the micro-surveillance device on her safe.

It was risky, illegal if caught without the warrant waiting on standby, and utterly terrifying. But as I drove through the dark suburban streets toward Grace’s house, I thought of Teresa’s trembling hands and the way she had wept on our kitchen floor.
I wasn't doing this just for justice. I was doing it to burn their empire to the ground.
