Chapter 4 - The Gala UnravelsBack at the country club ballroom, the string quartet was playing a gentle waltz, and the guests were gathered near the main stage as Fiona prepared to give her keynote speech about community philanthropy and family values.

Alex and I stood near the back of the room, flanked by two plainclothes detectives who had blended seamlessly into the catering staff.

Fiona stood at the podium, looking radiant in a custom emerald gown, smiling brightly as she adjusted the microphone.

“Thank you all so much for coming tonight,” Fiona began, her voice echoing through the grand hall. “For generations, my family has believed in building strong foundations—supporting our community, uplifting those in need, and standing together through every trial.”

Several people in the crowd applauded politely. Grace sat at the VIP table near the front, beaming with patrician pride, raising her champagne flute in silent toast.

Alex leaned over to me. “Is the warrant signed?”

My phone buzzed in my clutch. I glanced down at the screen. A single text from Detective Vance lit up the dark display: Warrant executed. Safe opened. Millions in illicit offshore transfers and forged deeds recovered. We are moving in on the venue now.

“It’s time,” I whispered.

Alex stepped out from the shadows of the back row and began walking down the central aisle toward the stage.

Fiona paused mid-sentence, her smile faltering as she noticed her brother striding toward her with a look of absolute, chilling calm.

“Alex, darling,” Fiona laughed nervously into the microphone, trying to play it off as a family quirk. “Are you coming up to share a few words about our foundation?”

Alex didn't stop until he reached the edge of the stage. He looked up at his sister, then swept his gaze across the sea of wealthy, confused faces in the audience.

“No, Fiona,” Alex said, his voice carrying clearly through the high-end sound system. “I’m not here to talk about the foundation. I’m here to talk about what you and Mother have been building behind closed doors.”

Grace stood up from the VIP table, her face draining of all color. “Alex! Have you lost your mind? Stop this foolishness right now!”

“Sit down, Mother,” Alex commanded, his tone dropping an octave with a lethal authority that made Grace freeze in her tracks. “For five months, you and Fiona treated our home like a sweatshop, forcing a fifty-two-year-old working woman to wash your clothes and clean up your messes while threatening her with false accusations of theft if she spoke out.”

A wave of shocked murmurs rippled through the ballroom. High-society ladies dropped their forks; local businessmen whispered behind their hands.

“That’s a lie!” Fiona shrieked from the stage, her face turning crimson. “That ungrateful cleaning woman stole from us! She’s a liar!”

“Is she?” Alex asked smoothly.

He pulled a remote from his pocket and clicked a button. The massive projector screen behind the stage—previously displaying the Worthington Foundation logo—suddenly flickered, blacked out for a second, and then burst into high-definition video.

It was the security camera footage from our house.
