Chapter 3 - The Surprise PartyAt 1:45 PM, the sun was completely obscured behind heavy gray clouds.

Inside our grand living room, the atmosphere was as taut as a piano wire.
Sitting around the large marble dining table were Arthur Vance, our forensic lawyer; Detective Thomas Mitchell from the Financial Crimes and Labor Exploitation Division; Marcus; and Teresa, who sat wrapped in a warm cardigan, supported on both sides by Alex and me.
On the table sat two high-powered audio recorders, a stack of certified legal summonses, and an iPad connected directly to the home security system's live feed.
At 1:58 PM, the iPad screen lit up.
A crisp black BMW SUV pulled into our driveway, parking illegally across the grass.
The driver's door opened, and Fiona stepped out, wearing a heavy white faux-fur coat, designer sunglasses, and carrying a iced matcha latte in one hand. She walked around to the trunk, opened it, and pulled out three massive, overflowing canvas laundry bags branded with her Apex Horizons logo.
Grace stepped out of the passenger side, wearing a silk scarf and holding a ring of keys.
"Look at them," Alex muttered, his hand gripping mine so tightly my bones ached. "Not a single care in the world."
"Let them walk in," Detective Mitchell said softly, adjusting his jacket to ensure his badge and holstered service weapon were visible. "Let them establish entry and intent."
We listened through the live audio monitor as the key turned in the lock of the back kitchen door.
The door swung open with a light creak.
Fiona’s loud, demanding voice echoed down the hallway before she even stepped fully into the house:
"Teresa! Get out here right now! I have twelve silk dresses that need to be hand-steamed before 5:00 PM for the boutique pop-up downtown! And don't use the cheap starch this time, it leaves spots!"
Grace’s voice followed immediately, sharp and bossy: "And clean up the kitchen while you're at it! Alex left his coffee mugs in the sink again. Honestly, that boy has no discipline!"
Fiona rounded the corner into the open-concept living room, dragging two heavy canvas bags across our hardwood floor.
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Grace stepped in right behind her, almost bumping into Fiona’s back. "Fiona, why did you stop—"
Grace’s voice cut off instantly.
The room was dead silent.
Grace and Fiona stood framed in the archway, holding overflowing laundry bags, staring at the six people assembled around the marble table.
Fiona’s eyes swept over the room—first catching Alex, then me, then Detective Mitchell’s official police badge, then Arthur Vance in his immaculate three-piece suit, and finally resting on Teresa and Marcus.
Fiona laughed, a high-pitched, nervous sound that rattled through the quiet room. "What... what is this? Alex? Why aren't you at work? What are all these people doing in your house?"
Grace quickly recovered her composure, her face instantly hardening into a mask of indignant fury. She snapped her eyes toward Teresa.
"Teresa!" Grace barked, stepping forward and pointing an accusatory finger. "What did I tell you about bringing strangers into my son's house? Who are these people? Get them out of here immediately or I will call the precinct and report you for trespassing!"
"You won't be calling anyone, Mrs. Blackwood," Detective Mitchell said smoothly, standing up from the table and pulling his official credentials from his pocket. "I am Detective Thomas Mitchell with the Chicago Police Department Financial Crimes Division. You need to drop those bags right now and step away from the doorway."
Fiona’s hands slipped, and the heavy canvas bags dropped to the floor with a loud thud, spilling several custom silk blouses across the hardwood floor.
"Police?" Grace stammered, her face turning pale, though she quickly tried to puff out her chest. "Detective, there has been a massive misunderstanding! I am Grace Blackwood! This is my son's home! I have a key!"
"A key you were given for emergency access, Mother," Alex said, his voice dropping into a tone so cold, so devoid of affection, that Grace actually flinched. "Not a key to run an illegal commercial garment operation using stolen money and forced labor."
"Alex!" Grace gasped, clutching her hand to her throat. "How dare you speak to your mother like that! What lies has this... this woman been feeding you?" She glared venomously at Teresa. "She's a thief, Alex! I caught her stealing my jewelry last week! I was showing her mercy by letting her work off her debt!"
"Shut your mouth, Grace," I snapped, standing up from the table, my voice ringing out like a whip crack. "We have six hundred hours of high-definition security camera footage recorded over the past five months."
I reached over and hit play on the iPad resting on the table.
The room echoed with Grace’s own recorded voice:
"If you complain again, you'll wake up accused of theft... People like you should be grateful we give you something to do..."
Fiona’s face drained of every ounce of color. She looked as though she was about to throw up her matcha latte right onto her silk coat.
"You... you recorded us?" Fiona whispered, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "In Alex's house? That's... that's an invasion of privacy!"
"This is my house, Fiona," I said, stepping right up to her, staring directly into her wide, panicked eyes. "You breached our privacy, you committed federal fraud, you stole fifty-four thousand dollars from Alex's trust, and you abused a woman who worked her fingers to the bone while you played fashion designer on stolen money."
Arthur Vance stood up, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out two thick stacks of legal documents.
"Mrs. Blackwood, Miss Blackwood," Arthur said in a precise, clinical tone. "You are hereby formally served with a civil lawsuit filed in the United States District Court. The complaint alleges human trafficking, labor extortion, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civil fraud. The total damages claimed by Miss Teresa Carter exceed seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
"Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars?!" Fiona shrieked, her voice reaching a hysterical pitch. "Are you insane?! She's a housekeeper! She isn't worth fifty thousand dollars!"
Marcus stood up slowly. He towered over Fiona, his dark eyes locked onto hers with absolute, terrifying hatred.
"My mother's dignity is priceless, Miss Blackwood," Marcus said, his baritone voice vibrating through the floorboards. "And by the time my legal team is finished with you, you won't even own the shoes on your feet."

Detective Mitchell stepped forward, pulling two pairs of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
"Grace Blackwood, Fiona Blackwood," Mitchell announced calmly. "You are both under arrest for felony bank fraud, wire fraud, and criminal extortion. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
