Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the EmpireThe sight of Grace and Fiona Blackwood being led out of our front door in steel handcuffs, flanked by police officers while rain began to pour again, was a image that would remain burned into my memory forever.

Fiona wept hysterically, her designer sunglasses falling off her face onto the wet driveway as officers guided her into the back of a black-and-white police cruiser. Grace screamed threats at Alex, cursing his name, calling him an ungrateful son, shouting that she would disown him from the family legacy.
Alex stood on the porch, his face completely motionless, watching the police cars pull away with their red-and-blue lights flashing against the gray afternoon.
He didn't cry. He didn't yell. He simply watched the women who shared his blood disappear into the criminal justice system.
By the following morning, the news of the arrest hit the local financial press like a megaton bomb.
Fiona’s brand, Apex Horizons, had been scheduled to launch its premier spring line at a major luxury pop-up in downtown Chicago that weekend. Instead, every major investor, boutique distributor, and social media sponsor pulled out within three hours of the felony indictment being made public.
Arthur Vance worked round the clock with federal auditors to freeze every asset associated with Apex Horizons LLC.
What they discovered during the deeper financial audit exposed the true extent of Grace's corruption.
Grace hadn't just stolen $54,000 from Alex's inheritance trust. Over the past three years, she had systematically siphoned off nearly $220,000 from various family accounts, including a small pension fund left by Alex's late aunt. She had used the money to fund a lavish, secret lifestyle of high-stakes gambling at local casinos, luxury spa retreats, and paying off Fiona's astronomical credit card debts.
To prevent her husband—Alex’s father, who was living in an assisted living facility suffering from early-stage dementia—from noticing the missing funds, Grace had been forging bank statements for years.
When Alex visited his mother at the Cook County Detention Center forty-eight hours after her arrest, I sat beside him in the sterile visitation room behind the thick safety glass.
Grace sat across from us, wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face pale and deeply lined without her usual heavy makeup.
She slammed her hand against the glass the moment Alex sat down.
"Alex!" Grace cried out, her voice raspy through the tiny metal speaker. "You have to post my bail! The lawyer says bail is set at two hundred and fifty thousand dollars! I can't stay in here, Alex! The women in this cell... they're savages!"
Alex stared at her through the glass. His eyes were entirely devoid of warmth.
"You forged my signature, Mother," Alex said quietly. "You stole my grandfather's trust. You took two hundred and twenty thousand dollars from Dad's pension. And you tortured Teresa."
"I did it for your sister!" Grace yelled, tears streaming down her face. "Fiona has talent, Alex! She just needed a break! A family is supposed to support each other! You have plenty of money! You and Elena live in a huge house, you have successful careers... why shouldn't your sister have a piece of that?"
"Because it wasn't yours to give," I cut in, leaning toward the speaker. "You didn't give Fiona a break, Grace. You built her dream on stolen money and enslaved labor. You threatened an innocent woman with prison."
"She was just a maid!" Grace spat, her eyes flashing with disgusting, unrepentant elitism. "She's nobody! Who cares about her?"
Alex slowly shook his head. A look of profound pity crossed his face.
"Teresa cared for me when I was sick, Mother," Alex said softly. "She cooked for Dad when he was losing his memory. She gave us love and loyalty every single day for three years. She is ten times the human being you or Fiona will ever be."
Alex stood up from the metal chair.
"Alex! Wait!" Grace panicked, banging frantically against the glass. "Where are you going?! You have to sign the property bond to get me out!"
"I spoke to the prosecutor this morning, Mother," Alex said, looking down at her through the glass. "I am testifying as the primary state witness against both you and Fiona. I am turning over every financial record, every bank transfer, and every piece of video evidence."
"You... you would betray your own mother?!" Grace shrieked, her voice breaking into a bizarre, horrifying shriek.
May you like
"You betrayed this family a long time ago, Grace," Alex said.
He turned his back on her, took my hand in his, and walked out of the visitation room, leaving his mother's frantic screaming behind him forever.
