By August 2026, I was no longer a contract auditor at Apex Global Risk.
I was the Vice President of Forensic Accounting and a minority partner.
My work had saved high-profile corporate clients tens of millions of dollars in liability. I owned a bright, sunlit condominium overlooking Puget Sound, drove a sleek dark-grey Audi, and lived a life defined by quiet elegance and complete financial independence.
Then came the morning of August 24, 2026.
Marcus Thorne called me into the executive conference room on the thirty-second floor of our downtown office tower.
"Elena," Marcus said, laying a glossy corporate dossier on the glass table. "We just closed the contract for the forensic audit of Lumina Creator Networks."
Lumina was a massive digital media agency that managed hundreds of social media influencers, talent agencies, and production companies across the West Coast. They were preparing for an IPO, but their board suspected that several mid-tier creators under their umbrella were inflating their revenue metrics and committing systematic tax fraud.
"They're sending in their regional talent managers today to hand over their physical ledgers and server access," Marcus explained. "I want you to lead the audit team."
"Understood," I said, opening the file.
I flipped to the list of creator accounts managed under Lumina's regional umbrella.
My finger paused halfway down page three.
Account ID: 884-PD. Creator Name: Kyle Reed / The Prank Dynasty LLC. Current Status: Insolvent / Under Foreclosure / Pending Contract Termination.
My heart didn't leap into my throat. My hands didn't shake.
Instead, a profound, icy calm settled over my chest.
Kyle had spent the last five years sinking deeper into debt. Desperate to maintain his lavish lifestyle, he had partnered with Lumina Creator Networks three years ago, taking massive cash advances against his future ad revenues while inflating his view counts using offshore bot networks—a federal crime.
He didn't know that Lumina had just hired Apex Global to scrub their books before the SEC reviewed their IPO filing.
