Chapter 6 - The Unbalanced Ledger

Before Kyle could utter another word, the side door of the suite opened.
Marcus Thorne stepped into the room, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Seattle Police Department and a senior prosecutor from the United States District Attorney’s Office.
Kyle looked frantically between Marcus, the officers, and me. "What... what is this?! What's going on?!"
I picked up the leather-bound audit report from my desk and opened it to page one.
"Over the last forty-eight hours, my department completed a comprehensive forensic audit of your creator account at Lumina," I stated, reading from the document with absolute precision. "We discovered three distinct schemes."
I turned the page.
"First: systematic tax evasion totaling $620,000 across four fiscal years. Second: wire fraud involving the intentional inflation of subscriber and engagement metrics to defraud Lumina out of $1.2 million in advance capital. And third..."
I looked up at Brad, whose face had completely collapsed into sheer terror.
"...unlawful wire transfers exceeding $400,000 sent directly to illegal offshore gambling syndicates in Costa Rica, registered under Bradley Reed's personal social security number."
Brad let out a whimpering gasp, sinking into a leather chair. "Kyle... you said she wouldn't check the Costa Rica transfers! You said the agency didn't have access to those files!"
"Shut up, Brad!" Kyle screamed, turning on his brother in a rage before spinning back toward me. "Lena, please! We're still legally married! You can't testify against me! Marital privilege!"
"Marital privilege does not apply to joint financial fraud committed against third-party corporate entities," the federal prosecutor stepped forward, pulling a pair of arrest warrants from his coat pocket. "And furthermore, Mrs. Reed filed for a formal legal separation with cause five years ago in Siskiyou County, California, citing severe domestic abandonment."
The two police officers stepped past me, taking hold of Kyle's and Brad's arms.
As the steel handcuffs clicked around Kyle’s wrists, he looked at me with wild, tear-filled eyes—the exact same desperate terror I had felt five years ago while standing beside a dusty gas station in the middle of nowhere.
"Lena!" Kyle sobbed, his voice cracking as the officers turned him toward the door. "Please! Don't do this to me! I loved you!"
I picked up my pen, signed the bottom of the audit report with a smooth, unwavering hand, and closed the folder.
"Good luck, Kyle," I said quietly, looking him dead in the eye. "You've got a long way to walk."
Three months later.
The morning sun broke through the autumn fog over Puget Sound, filling my oceanfront living room with clear, golden light.
I sat at my glass dining table, sipping a fresh cup of dark roast coffee while reading the morning edition of the Seattle Times.
On page four of the Business section sat a brief, two-paragraph article:
FORMER YOUTUBE CREATOR KYLE REED AND BROTHER SENTENCED TO 6 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR WIRE FRAUD AND TAX EVASION.
I looked at the small black-and-white photograph of Kyle being led into the federal courthouse in handcuffs. His face was hollow, defeated, and completely stripped of his former vanity.
I set the newspaper down.
My phone chimed on the table. A notification from my bank popped up on the screen: DIVORCE FINALIZED. SPOUSAL PROPERTY DIVISION COMPLETE.
I stood up, walked to the balcony, and pushed the glass door open. The cool, fresh salt air swept into the room, blowing through my hair as I looked out at the vast, open ocean stretching to the horizon.
Five years ago, three cruel men had left a terrified woman on the side of a deserted highway, laughing as they drove away.
They thought they were abandoning a victim.

They had no idea they were releasing a queen.
I smiled, took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, and stepped forward into the rest of my life.
