Chapter 2 - THE ATM MORNING AND THE FROZEN SCREENThe digital clock on the dashboard of Daniel Carter’s rusted sedan flashed 7:15 AM.

Daniel drummed his fingers aggressively against the steering wheel, whistling a tuneless tune through his teeth. He felt invincible. Sure, Maya was stuck in the hospital with a broken leg, and yes, the cops had briefly questioned him before letting him go due to a lack of immediate jail space and his mother’s smooth lies. But none of that mattered. What mattered was that today was payday from his job at the municipal water department, and more importantly, he was convinced that Maya’s stubbornness would break by noon. Once she realized she was entirely dependent on him while immobilized in that cast, she’d sign the lottery transfer forms, hand over the account keys to Lorna, and they’d all be moving into a luxury gated community by the weekend.

He pulled his car into the small parking lot of the local credit union on 5th Avenue, shifted into park, and hopped out, adjusting his jacket. He needed cash for breakfast, and he wanted to check if his direct deposit had cleared so he could treat his mother to brunch and gloat about their impending wealth.

He strode up to the outdoor ATM, slid his debit card into the slot, and punched in his four-digit PIN.

The machine hummed, the screen flickering through its blue loading menus. Daniel smirked, picturing the balance. With his paycheck plus the residual side-job money he’d stashed, he figured he’d see a nice, healthy cushion.

The screen abruptly flashed a harsh, glaring red warning.

TRANSACTION DENIED. ACCOUNT FROZEN PURSUANT TO COURT ORDER.

Daniel blinked, tilting his head. He pressed the buttons again, tapping Inquire Balance.

AVAILABLE BALANCE: $0.00 STATUS: SUSPENDED / LEGAL HOLD.

A cold drop of sweat rolled down the back of Daniel’s neck. He cursed under his breath, thinking it was just a standard bank glitch. He pulled his card out, shoved it back in, and tried his secondary checking account—the joint account he shared with Maya.

ACCESS REVOKED. PRIMARY ACCOUNT HOLDER HAS REMOVED AUTHORIZATION.

“What the hell?” Daniel muttered aloud, his voice rising in panic as a couple waiting behind him shifted uncomfortably. “No, no, no. That’s impossible.”

He smashed the cancel button, snatched his card back, and rushed toward the glass front doors of the credit union, which had just unlocked for the morning rush. He pushed his way inside, marching straight up to the nearest teller window, his face flushed red with sudden, blind fury.

“Listen to me!” Daniel barked, slamming his palm onto the counter. “Your machine just locked me out of my accounts! I want to talk to a manager right now! Someone has made a massive mistake!”

The teller, a young woman with a calm, professional demeanor, looked up from her screen, typed a few keys, and peered over her glasses at him.

“Are you Daniel Carter?” she asked evenly.

“Yes! Daniel Carter! And I demand—”

“Mr. Carter,” the teller interrupted smoothly, cutting him off. “Your accounts—both individual and joint—have been placed under a formal legal freeze initiated by the primary co-owner, Maya Carter, backed by a county court injunction and an emergency asset protection order filed by the State Attorney General’s office.”

Daniel felt the floor drop out from under him. The air seemed to vanish from the room.

“A court order?” he whispered, his voice cracking. “Maya is in a hospital bed with a broken leg! She can’t... she doesn't even know how to file a legal injunction!”

“Well, sir,” the teller said, offering a tight, unforgiving smile. “Her legal counsel filed the paperwork at 6:00 AM. Furthermore, all linked lines of credit, overdraft protections, and joint financial instruments associated with your social security number have been severed. You have a zero-dollar balance across all institutions.”

Daniel stood frozen in the center of the bank lobby, the humiliation burning hot in his chest as the reality of what he had done—and what Maya had unleashed—finally began to sink in.
