Chapter 5 - THE ARREST AND THE RECKONINGThe chaos in Room 312 erupted in a single second.

Officer Vance stepped into the room, his hand instinctively resting on the holster of his service weapon, while the two security guards moved with military precision, flanking Daniel and Lorna before they could react.
“Daniel Carter, Lorna Carter, step away from the patient immediately!” Officer Vance commanded, his voice echoing off the walls. “You are both in direct violation of emergency protective orders and trespassing in a restricted medical facility.”
“This is an outrage!” Lorna shrieked, waving her hands frantically as a security guard grasped her arm firmly to prevent her from lunging at Maya’s bed. “We are her family! She is manipulating the legal system to steal from us! Arrest her!”
“Mom, shut up, just shut up!” Daniel muttered, his bravado entirely evaporating as the cold steel of handcuffs was slapped onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
Officer Vance turned his attention to Maya, checking to make sure she was unharmed. “Are you alright, Mrs. Carter? Did they physically threaten you?”
“I’m completely fine, Officer Vance,” Maya replied steadily, gesturing toward her laptop. “And their entire interaction—every threat, every demand, and every profanity—was picked up by the secure dictation and audio recording software I left running on my consultation device for my legal team.”
Daniel’s face drained of all color. He stopped struggling against the cuffs, staring at Maya as if he were looking at a ghost. “You... you recorded us?”
“You didn't think I’d leave myself unprotected a second time, did you?” Maya asked, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. “You broke my leg, Daniel. You thought physical pain and intimidation would force me to hand over my future. But all you did was give me the courage to walk away forever.”
As the guards escorted a sobbing, hysterical Lorna and a shell-shocked, defeated Daniel out of the hospital room, the heavy double doors swung shut behind them, sealing off the past six years of abuse, manipulation, and fear.

Officer Vance lingered for a moment, pulling a small official envelope from his jacket pocket and placing it neatly on the bedside table.
“Your divorce papers and final asset sequestration orders have been expedited by the district judge, Maya,” the officer said quietly, offering a warm, reassuring smile. “You’re free.”
