Chapter 3 - The Crown Reclaimed

"No," Ethan muttered under his breath, a nervous, hysterical laugh bubbling up in his chest. "No, no, no. That's impossible."

"Ethan?" Vanessa asked, noticing the color draining from his face until he looked like a corpse. "What’s wrong with you?"

"That’s... that’s her," Ethan whispered, his knees wobbling beneath his tuxedo trousers. "That’s Clara."

Marcus Hayes snorted loudly, taking a gulp of his drink. "Don't be ridiculous, Ethan. Your wife is a diner waitress living in a townhouse. That woman is wearing a jewel collection worth more than this entire hotel. She probably arrived with one of the foreign investors."

Ethan couldn't hear him. His vision narrowed until all he could see was Clara moving through the crowd.

She didn't glance at the ice sculptures. She didn't look at the waiters offering champagne. She walked with terrifying purpose, the heavy silk of her train gliding over the carpet, flanked by six personal bodyguards and Harrison himself.

Executives from rival firms rushed forward, attempting to hand her their business cards, but Harrison’s security detail politely stepped in front of them, clearing a straight line directly toward Ethan’s table.

"She... she snuck in," Ethan breathed, terror turning into a sudden, frantic wave of rage. "She rented a dress! She used my credit card to buy knockoff jewelry to embarrass me!"

Before Marcus or Vanessa could stop him, Ethan pushed his chair back violently, spilling a glass of red wine onto the white tablecloth.

"Ethan! Wait!" Vanessa yelled, but he was already storming across the parquet floor, his face flushed red with humiliation and anger.

He met Clara in the center of the ballroom, directly beneath the giant central crystal chandelier, right in front of the head table where the entire board of directors was seated.

"What the hell are you doing here?!" Ethan hissed loudly, stepping into her path, his fists clenched at his sides.

Clara stopped. Her bodyguards instantly stepped forward to tackle him, but Clara raised one delicate, gloved finger.

The bodyguards froze.

Clara looked at Ethan. She didn't flinch. She didn't look hurt. Her eyes were as cold and flat as polished granite.

"Get out of my way, Ethan," she said softly. Her voice wasn't a scream or a cry; it was a quiet command that made the air in Ethan's lungs feel heavy.

Ethan laughed hysterically, glancing around at the crowd of five hundred elites watching them. "You think you can embarrass me?! You think you can rent some costume, throw on fake diamonds, and crash my promotion party?!"

He stepped closer, leaning into her face, his voice dropping to an angry whisper.

"I told you what would happen if you showed up here, Clara. I told you security would throw you out on your face. You smell like grease and cheap bleach, and you’re ruining the biggest night of my life!"

He turned around, waving his arms toward the hotel security guards stationed at the doors.

"Security!" Ethan shouted at the top of his lungs. "Security, over here right now! This woman is a trespasser! She stole a fake invitation and she’s harassing the executive team!"

Four heavy-set hotel security guards rushed forward, pulling out their radios.

Vanessa walked up behind Ethan, crossing her arms, a smug, cruel sneer on her face. "You really are pathetic," Vanessa said to Clara, looking her up and down. "Ethan threw you away because you’re a nobody. Did you really think wearing a green dress would make him want a scrub like you back?"

The ballroom went dead silent. The music stopped. The guests held their breath, waiting for the tragic spectacle of a crazy trespasser being dragged out into the rain.

Harrison stepped forward.

He didn't look at Ethan. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked directly at the Chief of Hotel Security who was rushing toward them.

"Stand down," Harrison said quietly.

The Chief of Security halted instantly, his face turning pale as he recognized the billionaire trustee. "Mr. Harrison! Sir, this gentleman claimed—"

"This gentleman is an idiot," Harrison interrupted, his voice echoing across the silent ballroom.

Harrison turned to face the entire crowd, gesturing toward Clara.

"Ladies and gentlemen of Vanguard Dominion, distinguished guests, and members of the press," Harrison announced, his voice filled with unquestioned authority. "It is my honor to introduce the controlling shareholder, sole heir to the Vaughn estate, and Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Vanguard Dominion..."

Harrison bowed deeply toward Clara.

"...Madam Chairwoman Clara Eleanor Vaughn."
