Chapter 4 - The Execution

The silence that followed was so absolute you could hear the fizzing of champagne bubbles in the nearest glass.
Ethan stood frozen, his arm still half-raised toward security. His mouth hung open, his eyes bulging as if his brain had completely ceased to process reality.
"Chair... woman?" Ethan croaked out, his voice cracking like a child's. "No. No, Harrison, you're mistaken. Her name is Clara Cole. She's my wife. She works at the diner on 5th Street! She scrubs floors!"
Harrison turned his head slowly, looking down at Ethan with pure, unadulterated disgust.
"Her name is Clara Vaughn," Harrison said coldly. "Her grandfather founded Vanguard Dominion forty years ago. Her family owns fifty-one percent of the voting equity in this corporation. The townhouse you live in? Owned by the Vaughn Trust. The car you drive? Leased through a Vaughn subsidiary. The shirt on your back was bought with money she earned while allowing you to play the ambitious corporate husband."
Vanessa backed away from Ethan as if he were covered in radioactive waste. "Ethan... what is he talking about?"
"She's lying!" Ethan screamed, turning wildly to face Marcus Hayes, who had rushed over from the head table. "Marcus! Tell them! She’s my wife! She has no money!"
Marcus Hayes wasn't looking at Ethan. Marcus was staring at Clara, his face completely drained of color, sweat breaking out across his forehead. He knew the Vaughn family history. He knew the founder had a granddaughter who had vanished from high society seven years ago.
"My God..." Marcus whispered, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the floor. "It’s really her."
Clara took one step toward Ethan.
The rustle of her three-hundred-thousand-dollar silk gown sounded like a executioner's blade being drawn from its scabbard.
"Seven years, Ethan," Clara said, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly deadly. "Seven years I watched you complain about how unfair the world was. Seven years I worked twelve-hour shifts so you could study without stress. I paid your tuition. I bought your first suit. I sold my mother's heirloom ring so you could pay your executive exam fees."
Ethan’s chest heaved. "Clara... baby... listen to me—"
"I wanted to build a life with a man who loved me for who I was, not for my family’s name or my bank account," Clara continued, stepping closer until she was standing inches from him. "I gave you seven years to show me who you truly were when you had nothing."
She looked down at his pristine black tuxedo, then looked into his terrified, weeping eyes.
"And the moment you thought you had a tiny taste of power, you burned my dress over a grill and told me I was an embarrassment."
"Clara, please!" Ethan fell to his knees right there on the polished ballroom floor, right in front of five hundred executives, news cameras, and board members. He reached out frantically, trying to grab the hem of her green gown. "I was confused! I was stressed about the promotion! I didn't mean it! I love you! You know I love you!"
Clara stepped back smoothly, avoiding his trembling, desperate hands.
"Harrison," Clara said, turning her back on her husband. "Let us proceed with the board meeting."
Harrison pulled an official leather binder from his briefcase and opened it.
"By order of the Chairwoman of the Board," Harrison read aloud, his voice projecting across the entire room, "the proposed promotion of Ethan Cole to Vice President of Operations is hereby DENIED."
Ethan let out a strangled sob, clutching his head in his hands.
"Furthermore," Harrison continued, "effective immediately, Ethan Cole’s employment with Vanguard Dominion is TERMINATED FOR CAUSE due to active fraud, gross misconduct, and security violations."
"Wait!" Marcus Hayes interjected frantically, trying to salvage his own position. "Madam Chairwoman! I had no idea Ethan was involved in any misconduct! I was misled by him! I am loyal to the board!"
Clara turned her cold, dark gaze onto Marcus.
"Director Hayes," Clara said softly. "Do you really think I didn't audit the books before walking into this room?"
Marcus went completely rigid.
"The three shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Apex Operations'?" Clara revealed, her words dropping like heavy iron weights. "The twelve million dollars in fraudulent vendor invoices you and Ethan signed off on over the last six months?"
Marcus’s jaw dropped.

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Securities and Exchange Commission were notified at 9:00 PM tonight," Clara announced calmly. "They are waiting in the hotel lobby."
As if on cue, the heavy double doors opened once more. Six federal agents in dark suits accompanied by Chicago Police officers marched into the ballroom, heading straight for Marcus Hayes and Ethan Cole.
