Chapter 3 - Seeds of Paranoia

Revenge is sweetest when the victim dismantles their own life from the inside out.

I didn't confront Garrett with the financial evidence. Instead, I began planting seeds of absolute madness in his daily routine.

It started with small things.

I ordered an exact replica of the green stuffed dinosaur Ethan held when he died. One night, while Garrett was at a hotel with Julianna, I placed the stuffed animal in the passenger seat of Garrett’s luxury SUV, resting right on the leather upholstery.

When Garrett came home at 3:00 a.m., he stumbled into the house, his face ghost-white, sweat pouring down his neck.

"Clara..." he stammered, his eyes darting around the living room. "Did... did you go out to my car tonight?"

I looked up from my tea, my eyes wide and innocent. "No, Garrett. I haven't left the house since Tuesday. Why?"

"Nothing... nothing," he lied, his voice shaking. "I... I must be sleep-deprived."

The next day, I had Marcus’s private investigator hack into Garrett’s office calendar. Every day at exactly 11:47 a.m. and 11:47 p.m., Garrett’s phone would play a quiet, recorded audio file of a heart monitor flatlining, followed by a child’s whisper: "Is Daddy coming?"

The audio was routed through anonymous spoof servers.

Within a week, Garrett looked like a ghost. He missed important board meetings. He shouted at his assistants. During a high-stakes presentation to the Vance Investment Board, his laptop screen suddenly mirrored a private folder titled The Ritz-Carlton, Suite 1204, displaying timestamps matching the exact hours of Ethan’s passing.

He slammed his laptop shut in front of Arthur Vance, sweating profusely, claiming it was a malicious virus.

Julianna began to grow distant. She didn't want a suave, rising executive who was unravelling into a paranoid, jittery mess. She wanted power, prestige, and composure.

"You're losing your mind, Garrett," Julianna hissed at him in an intercepted phone recording from his car. "My father is questioning your competence. If you don't pull yourself together before the Annual Vanguard Gala next week, the senior partnership goes to Thomas!"

"Someone is harassing me, Julianna!" Garrett screamed into the phone, slamming his hand on the steering wheel. "Someone knows about us! Someone knows about the money!"

"Then fix it!" she snapped. "Or don't bother coming to my father's gala."

That night, Garrett came home drunk. He threw his briefcase across the living room and grabbed me by the shoulders, shaking me.

"Are you doing this?" he roared, his breath smelling of bourbon. "Are you messing with my head, Clara? Answer me!"

I didn't fight back. I let my body go completely limp in his grip. I looked up at him with dark, hollow eyes, allowing a slow, terrifyingly calm smile to spread across my face.

"Why would I mess with your head, Garrett?" I whispered softly. "I'm just waiting for Ethan to come home. Aren't you?"

Garrett recoiled as if he had touched a red-hot iron. He stumbled back, looking at me with pure horror, before turning around and fleeing the house into the night.

He thought I was going insane.

He had no idea that I was the sanest I had ever been in my entire life.
