Chapter 4 - The Night of Reckoning

The Annual Vanguard Financial Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel—an opulent affair filled with Chicago’s elite, politicians, news anchors, and billionaire investors.

Garrett arrived alone, looking immaculate in a classic tuxedo, though no amount of expensive foundation could hide the dark circles carved under his eyes. He had spent the last three days sleeping in his office, terrified of being in the house with me.

Julianna Vance stood by the entrance, wearing a dazzling emerald silk gown, flanked by her father, Arthur Vance.

Garrett forced his signature charismatic smile, striding toward them with a glass of champagne in hand. "Arthur. Julianna. A magnificent turnout tonight."

"Let's hope your financial report is as impressive as the turnout, Garrett," Arthur Vance said dryly. "The board votes on the Senior Partner seat at midnight."

"You won't be disappointed, sir," Garrett assured him, taking a deep sip of champagne.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom swung open.

The chatter in the room softened, then died down completely.

I walked into the ballroom.

I was not wearing the drab, grieving-mother black Garrett expected. I wore a backless, floor-length gown of liquid obsidian, custom-tailored to highlight every curve. My hair was swept up in a flawless chignon, diamond dust glittering along my collarbone.

I looked magnificent. I looked lethal.

Garrett’s champagne glass nearly slipped from his fingers. "Clara?" he gasped, rushing over to intercept me. "What are you doing here? You... you said you couldn't handle crowds!"

"I couldn't miss the biggest night of your career, darling," I said smoothly, my voice carrying clearly to the surrounding guests. I reached up and gently straightened his bow tie. "After all... Ethan would have wanted me to be here."

At the mention of Ethan's name, Garrett flinched.

At 11:30 p.m., Arthur Vance took the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced into the microphone, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Tonight, as we celebrate thirty years of Vanguard Financial, we also announce our newest Managing Senior Partner. A man who has demonstrated unparalleled drive, fiscal genius, and unwavering commitment..."

Garrett adjusted his jacket, puffing his chest out, preparing to step forward.

"Before we announce the name," Arthur continued, "we have a brief tribute presentation prepared by the family of our prospective partner."

The grand lights in the ballroom dimmed. The massive 4K projector screen behind the stage flickered to life.

Garrett smiled, assuming I had put together a soft, tear-jerking video about family values to secure the conservative board members' votes.

The video began.

It wasn't a family tribute.

The screen displayed a high-definition document scan: ETHAN MILLER’S DEATH CERTIFICATE, timestamped 11:47 P.M.

A murmur ran through the crowd. Garrett’s smile froze.

"What is this?" Garrett whispered, turning toward me in panic. "Clara, turn it off!"

Then the audio played over the ballroom’s surround-sound speakers.

It was the recorded emergency room audio: the harsh, flatline tone of Ethan’s heart monitor, accompanied by my crying voice begging: "Please, call his father again! It's call eighteen! Please!"

The screen split into two panels.

On the left panel: 18 MISSED CALLS TO GARRETT MILLER (11:00 PM – 11:47 PM).

On the right panel: HOTEL KEY CARD LOG & SECURITY FOOTAGE – THE PENINSULA HOTEL, SUITE 1204.

The ballroom went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop on the carpet.

High-definition security footage played on the forty-foot screen showing Garrett Miller walking into Suite 1204 at 8:30 p.m. with Julianna Vance, kissing her passionately against the doorframe, holding a bottle of vintage champagne.

Then came the text logs, magnified for every billionaire, investor, and board member to read:

Garrett (11:15 PM): She’s called six times in a row. It’s annoying. I put it on Silent. Now where were we?

Gasps erupted across the room. Julianna Vance’s face drained of all color as guests turned to stare at her. Arthur Vance’s jaw dropped in absolute shock and fury.

"Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" Garrett screamed, lunging toward the AV booth.

He didn't make it.

The screen flashed one final document: FEDERAL FORENSIC AUDIT OF THE MILLER-VANCE FUND & ETHAN MILLER TRUST.

It showed bank statements highlighting $1.2 million embezzled from Ethan’s pediatric medical trust, traced directly to Garrett’s personal offshore accounts, including a $400,000 wire transfer to purchase Gold Coast Unit 4B for Julianna Vance.

At the bottom of the screen, in bold red letters, was a copy of the criminal indictment filed thirty minutes earlier by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The side doors of the ballroom burst open.

Four uniformed federal agents, led by two investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission, marched down the center aisle.

"Garrett Miller?" the lead agent announced, his voice booming over the silence. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities fraud."

Garrett backed away, his hands flying up in terror. "No! No! This is a mistake! My wife is crazy! She fabricated this!"

He turned to Julianna. "Julianna, tell them! Tell your father!"

Julianna backed away from him as if he were covered in plague. "Don't touch me, you sick monster!" she spat, slapped him across the face, and turned to her father, who was already calling his legal team to disown Garrett completely.

The federal agents tackled Garrett to the plush carpet right in front of the stage, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As they dragged him up, Garrett’s eyes locked onto mine.

I was standing three feet away. I held a glass of champagne in my gloved hand. I didn't look angry. I didn't look hurt. I looked down at him with a quiet, triumphant serenity.

"Why, Clara?" Garrett sobbed, blood dripping from his lip onto his crisp white shirt. "Why did you do this to me?"

May you like

I leaned in close, so only he could hear my words over the cameras flashing in his face.

"Ethan spent his last five minutes whispering your name, Garrett," I whispered softly into his ear. "Now you’re going to spend the next twenty years whispering mine."
