Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

"This is a joke," Ethan spat, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, glaring down at Arthur. "I built Vance Technologies! I am the CEO! I own twelve percent of the stock! You think a dead woman’s spite can strip me of my life’s work? I’ll contest this will in probate court tomorrow morning. I’ll hire every top-tier litigator in the country. Maya won't see a single dime by the time I'm done tying this up in appeals for the next ten years!"
Arthur Pendelton slowly closed the leather folder, a calm, pitying expression on his face. "You can certainly try, Ethan. But your mother anticipated that. She included an ironclad in terrorem clause. If you attempt to challenge this will in any court of law, your remaining twelve percent shares in Vance Technologies—shares that were originally gifted to you via a family trust sub-clause—will automatically be forfeited and transferred directly to the primary beneficiary. Which, I remind you, is Maya."
Ethan froze. The air in his lungs felt like liquid lead. He was trapped. If he fought the will, he lost the last piece of leverage he had over his own company. If he didn't fight it, his estranged wife was now his boss, his landlord, and the holder of his entire family's legacy.
"Maya," Ethan said, turning toward her, his voice shifting from rage to a desperate, hurried negotiation. He walked across the room, leaving Chloe standing awkwardly by the desk. He knelt in front of Maya’s chair, trying to catch her eyes. "Maya, look at me. We had a misunderstanding. The divorce... it was just business panic. Chloe... it’s complicated, she’s pregnant, but we don't have to destroy everything we built. Let's work this out. We can create a joint trust. We can split the voting rights fifty-fifty. You don't know how to run a tech conglomerate. You need me."
Maya looked down at the man who had once been her husband. She remembered the nights she had spent crying in their empty bed, the coldness in his voice when he slid the folder across the table, the smug smile on Chloe’s face as she flaunted the anniversary shirt.
She felt no anger. She felt no desire for petty revenge. She simply felt a profound, liberating sense of justice.
"Get up, Ethan," Maya said, her voice quiet, steady, and utterly authoritative.
Ethan blinked, staying on his knees for a second before slowly standing up, his face burning with humiliation.
"First of all," Maya said, standing up to meet his gaze, "I managed the Vance-Sterling Foundation for five years, which handles more capital assets than your entire European division. Do not lecture me on what I know how to run. Second of all, your offer of a two-million-dollar settlement and the penthouse is officially off the table."
"Maya, please—" Chloe started, stepping forward, but Maya raised a single hand, cutting her off instantly.
"As the sole owner of the Vance Ancestral Trust and the controlling shareholder of Vance Technologies," Maya announced, looking between Ethan and Chloe, "I am exercising my rights effective immediately. Ethan, your corporate access codes to the executive floor will be deactivated by midnight. The board of directors has already been notified by Arthur of the transition of voting power. An emergency board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at nine a.m. to review your position as Chief Executive Officer."
"You can't fire me!" Ethan roared. "The company needs me! The investors trust me!"
"The investors trust stability, Ethan. And a CEO who embezzles corporate funds to hide an eighteen-month affair with his secretary is not stable," Maya said, nodding to Arthur. "Arthur, please have security escort Mr. Vance and Miss Davenport off the premises. They are no longer permitted on any property owned by the Vance Trust."
Two large, uniformed security guards stepped into the library from the hallway, their expressions grim.
Chloe looked at Ethan, her panic finally turning into absolute terror. "Ethan! Do something! Tell them they can't do this! Where are we going to live?! The penthouse—"
May you like
"The penthouse is a trust asset, Miss Davenport," Arthur added cheerfully as he gathered his papers. "I suggest you check into a hotel. Preferably one you can pay for out of your own pocket."
As Ethan was guided out of the room by his shoulders, his face twisted in a mixture of shock and impotent fury, he looked back at Maya. She was standing tall, framed by the grand window, the dark clouds outside finally breaking to let a single ray of evening sunlight illuminate the room. She was no longer the woman he had tried to walk away from. She was the matriarch now.
