Chapter 5 - The Corporate and Personal Collapse

The emergency boardroom meeting of Vance Technologies on Thursday morning was a bloodbath. The room was populated by twenty of the country’s most powerful institutional investors and board members, all sitting around a massive glass table.
Ethan sat at the foot of the table, his eyes bloodshot, his tie loosened. He had spent the entire night calling every contact he had, begging for support, but the moment the news of Eleanor’s will had leaked to the financial press, his allies had vanished like smoke.
At the head of the table sat Maya. She wore a flawless charcoal power suit, her demeanor calm, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and a team of top-tier forensic accountants from London.
"The audit is clear, gentlemen," Maya said, her voice echoing through the silent boardroom as she clicked a remote, displaying financial charts on the massive wall monitors. "Over the past eighteen months, Dr. Vance has utilized the company’s priority development fund to finance private travel, luxury real estate leases in Miami, and offshore consultancy fees routed directly to entities controlled by Chloe Davenport. The total amount of corporate embezzlement stands at fourteen million dollars."
A collective murmur of disgust went through the board. The older board members, who had always respected Eleanor’s old-school discipline, looked at Ethan with open hostility.
"This is a setup!" Ethan shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "Those were legitimate business development expenses! Chloe was providing crucial administrative support for our international expansion!"
"Administrative support does not require a four-million-dollar penthouse lease in Miami Beach, Ethan," one of the senior board members, a long-time friend of Eleanor’s, said coldly. "Maya, as the controlling shareholder representing forty-eight percent of the voting stock, what is your proposal?"
"I call for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Ethan Vance from the position of Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, for cause, without severance," Maya said clearly. "Furthermore, the Vance Trust will be filing formal civil charges to reclaim the fourteen million dollars in stolen corporate assets."
"I second the motion," three board members said simultaneously.
"All in favor?" Maya asked.
Every hand around the table went up. Except Ethan’s.
He sank back into his leather chair, the realization hitting him with crushing force. He wasn't just losing his wife; he was being ejected from the company he had spent his entire adult life building, branded as a thief and a fraud before the entire global tech community.
"You're destroying my life," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking as the board members began gathering their tablets and exiting the room, refusing to even look at him.
"No, Ethan," Maya said, walking down the length of the table until she stood over him. "You destroyed your own life the moment you decided that honesty, loyalty, and decency were optional for someone of your status. I’m just cleaning up the wreckage."
While Ethan’s corporate world collapsed, his personal life followed suit with terrifying speed. Two weeks later, Chloe stood in the lobby of a mid-tier residential hotel, surrounded by stacks of designer luggage. The corporate credit cards Ethan had given her had all been canceled, and the luxury penthouse they had shared had been locked down by court order.
Ethan walked into the lobby, his face pale, wearing a crumpled suit. He had spent the last four days in depositions with federal prosecutors regarding the corporate fraud charges.
"Ethan, thank God!" Chloe cried, running to him. "The hotel says the card for the room reservation was declined this morning! They’re telling me we have to check out by noon! Where is the money from the settlement? Did Maya sign the papers?"
Ethan looked at her, his eyes hollow and dead. "There is no money, Chloe. Maya filed a motion to freeze all my personal bank accounts pending the outcome of the embezzlement lawsuit. I'm broke. The lawyers say if I don't sign a full confession and return the assets, I’m looking at five to seven years in federal prison."
Chloe stepped back, her hand dropping from his arm as if he had suddenly turned into ash. Her face contorted into a look of sharp, calculating disgust. "What do you mean you're broke? You're Ethan Vance! You’re a billionaire!"
"I was a billionaire, Chloe! Because of my mother’s trust!" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "But right now, I don't even have enough money to pay the retainer for a criminal defense attorney!"
"I can't live like this," Chloe whispered, looking at the generic hotel lobby, then at her own pregnant stomach. "I didn't sign up for this, Ethan. You told me you controlled everything. You told me your wife was a nobody who would walk away without a fight."
"Chloe, please... we have the baby coming," Ethan pleaded, reaching for her.

"Don't touch me," Chloe snapped, pulling her designer bag onto her shoulder. "I'm going back to my mother’s house in Ohio. My lawyer will be in touch about child support. If there's even any money left for that."
She turned on her heel and walked out of the hotel doors, leaving Ethan standing completely alone in the center of the drab lobby, finally realizing that the loyalty he had bought with his stolen wealth was as hollow as the empire he had lost.
