Chapter 3 - The Deception of the Past

The winter storm raged outside Mercer Island for the next three days, encasing the pine trees in thick coats of glittering ice.
Inside the medical suite at Calloway Estate, the atmosphere was warm, quiet, and intensely peaceful. Under the constant care of Dr. Chen and Dr. Vance, my physical recovery progressed remarkably fast. My fractured pelvis was stabilized with specialized support braces, my broken ribs began the slow process of mending, and most importantly, ultrasound scans confirmed that my baby girl was growing stronger every day, her vital signs perfect.
Ethan barely left my side.
He set up a satellite office in the adjoining sitting room, conducting multi-million-dollar board meetings via encrypted video calls, but the moment a meeting ended, he was back in my room—bringing me warm soup, reading books aloud to me, or simply sitting in the armchair beside my bed, watching me sleep with a quiet, protective vigilance.
On the fourth evening, as the snow fell softly against the glass doors, I sat propped up against a mountain of plush pillows, watching Ethan review legal briefs at his desk.
"Ethan?" I called softly.
He immediately closed his laptop and walked over to my bed, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "What's wrong, Maya? Are you in pain? Do you need more medication?"
"No," I whispered, reaching out to touch his hand. "I'm not in pain. I... I need to ask you something. Something about three years ago."
Ethan’s expression stiller slightly, his posture becoming guarded, but he nodded. "Ask me anything."
"Three years ago... the night before I left you," I began, my voice trembling with old memories. "I received an anonymous envelope at my apartment. Inside were twenty high-resolution photographs of you entering a penthouse suite at the Four Seasons with Victoria Sterling—Harold Sterling’s daughter. And with the photos was an audio recording of your voice, saying you were only marrying me to secure my grandfather's historical real estate holdings in downtown Seattle."
Ethan closed his eyes for a long moment, a deep, painful breath expanding his chest. When he opened his eyes, they were burning with raw, agonizing truth.
"I know," Ethan whispered softly.
I blinked, stunned. "You... you knew about the envelope?"
"I didn't know about it the night you vanished," Ethan corrected gently. "I found out three weeks later when I hired private investigators to track down why the love of my life had suddenly abandoned me without a word."
Ethan reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and tapped the screen, opening an archived media file. He handed the phone to me.
"Look at the metadata on those photos, Maya," Ethan explained.
I looked at the digital file displayed on the screen. It was an advanced forensic breakdown of the photos I had received three years ago.
"The photos were real, Maya," Ethan said honestly. "I did enter that hotel suite with Victoria Sterling. But what the photos didn't show was that there were six other corporate attorneys in that room with us. We were closing a high-stakes corporate acquisition to save a struggling tech startup. Victoria was the lead counsel for the sellers."
He tapped the screen again, opening a voice-frequency analysis chart.
"And the audio recording?" Ethan continued, his voice cold with contempt. "It was an early-generation audio deepfake created using voice samples stolen from my public keynote speeches. It was manufactured by a private digital intelligence firm based in California."
My jaw dropped. "A deepfake...? Three years ago?"
"Who hired that firm to create the fake photos and audio, Ethan?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat.
Ethan looked at me with deep sorrow. "It was Chloe, Maya. Funded by Ryan Carter."
The world seemed to tilt beneath me once again.
"Ryan and Chloe had been planning this since before you and I even got engaged," Ethan revealed softly. "Ryan’s hedge fund was already bleeding money back then. He knew your grandfather’s trust was worth over fifteen million dollars, but he couldn't get near you as long as you were with me. So he and Chloe created a wedge. They manufactured the evidence of my supposed infidelity, sent it to you when they knew I was on a twelve-hour flight to Tokyo, and waited for you to panic."
Tears streamed down my cheeks as the terrible, tragic puzzle of my life finally clicked together in complete, horrifying clarity.
"I fell right into their trap," I wept, hiding my face in my hands. "I was so hurt... so heartbroken... I didn't even ask you. I didn't give you a chance to explain. I just packed my bags and ran... and Ryan was right there waiting at the airport to 'rescue' me..."
"Maya, stop," Ethan commanded softly, but firmly. He pulled my hands away from my face, holding them tightly against his chest, forcing me to look into his eyes. "You were twenty-four years old. You were innocent, you loved deeply, and you were targeted by two sociopaths who had spent months studying your insecurities. You are not to blame for believing the people you thought were your sister and your friend."
"I wasted three years, Ethan," I sobbed. "I married a monster... I almost died..."
"You are alive," Ethan whispered, leaning forward and gently pressing his lips to my forehead, holding the kiss for a long, sacred moment. "You are here. You are safe. And I am never letting you go again."
The warmth of his lips against my skin melted the final lingering icy reserves of my heart. I reached up with my bruised arms, wrapping them around his neck, pulling him down to me as I wept tears of pure relief, forgiveness, and reborn love into the shoulder of his sweater.
He held me tightly, his hand gently resting on the curve of my back, cradling me as if I were the most precious treasure in the universe.
Suddenly, a sharp, sudden kick from inside my belly bumped firmly against Ethan’s waist.
Ethan froze.
He pulled back slightly, his eyes wide with utter astonishment, looking down at my pregnant stomach.
"Did she...?" Ethan whispered, awestruck. "Did she just kick?"
A soft, tearful laugh escaped my lips. "Yes. She did."
With infinite gentleness, Ethan reached out, resting his large palm flat against the front of my dress over my belly.
A second later, another strong, healthy kick pressed right against the center of his palm.
Ethan’s breathing hitched. A breathtaking, radiant smile broke across his hard, handsome face—a smile so pure and full of genuine, overflowing joy that it made my heart soar.
"She’s strong," Ethan murmured, his voice thick with emotion as he gently stroked the curve of my belly. "She’s a fighter. Just like her mother."
He looked up at me, his dark eyes shining with an unspoken, powerful vow.
"She will have my name, Maya," Ethan declared softly, but with absolute conviction. "When she is born, she will be a Calloway. I will raise her, protect her, and love her as my own daughter for every day of my life. No one will ever make her feel unsafe or unwanted. I promise you."

Looking into his eyes, hearing the absolute truth in his voice, I knew that my baby girl would never lack a real father. The man who had pushed me off a balcony had given up his right to exist in her world.
The man holding us right now was her true father in every way that mattered.
