Chapter 6 - A Christmas Miracle & The New Horizon

One year later.

Christmas Eve at Calloway Estate.

A massive, twenty-foot Christmas tree stood in the center of the grand living room, decorated with thousands of twinkling warm gold lights, crystal ornaments, and red velvet ribbons. The massive stone fireplace crackled with a warm, roaring fire, filling the house with the sweet scent of fresh pine, cinnamon, and roasting chestnuts.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a gentle, beautiful snow was falling over Lake Washington, dusting the evergreen trees in pristine white.

Inside, laughter filled the air.

Eighteen-month-old Noelle—wearing a tiny red velvet holiday dress with a white lace collar—was toddling across the thick Persian rug on her chubby legs, chasing Buster, Ethan’s gentle golden retriever, while squealing with pure, unbridled delight.

"Careful, sweet pea!" I laughed, sitting on the plush velvet sofa, holding a cup of hot cocoa.

Noelle turned around, her big, bright blue eyes sparkling with mischief, and toddled straight toward the sofa. She didn't stumble; she ran with boundless energy, throwing her tiny arms around my knees.

"Mama! Look! Snow!" Noelle babbled happily, pointing her small finger toward the window.

"I see the snow, my darling," I smiled, leaning down to scoop her up into my lap, pressing a warm kiss against her soft, rose-scented cheek.

Footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor.

Ethan walked into the living room, wearing a dark navy cashmere sweater and dark trousers. He looked relaxed, radiant, and deeply, completely happy.

He walked over to the sofa, leaning down to kiss the top of my head before scooping Noelle up into his arms, tossing her gently into the air while she let out a delighted screech of laughter.

"Who’s my favorite girl in the whole world?" Ethan cooed, cradling Noelle against his broad chest, gently tickling her tummy until she giggled uncontrollably.

"Me! Me!" Noelle cheered, wrapping her tiny arms tightly around Ethan’s neck and pressing her face into his cheek. "Daddy!"

My heart swelled with a love so deep and powerful it took my breath away.

Over the past year, Ethan had formally and legally adopted Noelle. Her birth certificate had been reissued, officially naming her Noelle Maya Calloway. From the moment she took her first steps to the moment she spoke her first word—which had been "Daddy"—Ethan had been there for every second of her life, loving her with a fierce, unconditional devotion that erased every shadow of her biological father's existence.

Ethan set Noelle down on the rug with a soft toy, then walked over to sit beside me on the sofa.

He wrapped his warm arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side. I rested my head on his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

"What are you thinking about, sweetheart?" Ethan asked softly, his fingers gently stroking my arm.

"I was thinking about two Christmas mornings ago," I admitted quietly, looking out at the falling snow. "I was falling through the freezing air, convinced that my life was over. I thought there was no hope left in the world."

Ethan tightened his grip on me, his chin resting against the top of my head. "And now?"

I turned my face up to look at him.

"And now," I murmured, "I realize that falling off that balcony was the moment my real life began. Because it brought me back to you."

Ethan reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

My breath caught in my throat.

He slid down off the sofa onto one knee on the rug before me.

The firelight danced across his handsome face, illuminating the raw, intense devotion shining in his dark eyes.

He opened the box.

Inside sat a breathtaking, flawless seven-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, surrounded by a band of micro-pave pink diamonds—the exact ring he had bought for me four years ago, the ring he had kept in his private vault every single day we were apart.

"Maya Vance," Ethan said, his voice deep, steady, and thick with emotion. "Three years ago, I lost you because of lies and my own failure to protect you. But fate gave me a second chance. You and Noelle are my entire world, my purpose, my heart, and my home. I love you more than life itself."

He took my trembling hand in his, looking directly into my eyes.

"Will you marry me, Maya? Will you let me love you, protect you, and cherish you for every Christmas, every summer, and every day for the rest of our lives?"

Tears of pure, overflowing happiness spilled down my cheeks.

"Yes," I whispered, my voice breaking with emotion. "Yes, Ethan! A thousand times yes!"

Ethan slid the magnificent ring onto my finger—a perfect fit.

He stood up, pulling me into his arms, and brought his lips down to mine in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed our past, our present, and our forever.

Beside us on the rug, Noelle clapped her tiny hands together, squealing with joy, while the warm fire crackled and the white snow fell silently over our home.

The dark winter was finally over.

We had survived the fall, defeated the shadows, and built a sanctuary of truth, love, and light—a home where we would live happily ever after.
