Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Citadel

When the door to the Commissioner’s office opened, Jason hurried inside. He looked immaculate as always—his bespoke navy suit pressed perfectly, his hair styled, looking every bit the high-earning corporate executive. But beneath the polished exterior, I could see the subtle signs of panic. His tie was slightly crooked, and a light sheen of sweat coated his forehead. He didn't notice the two uniformed officers stationed right outside the door, nor did he look at my father who sat behind the massive desk like a judge awaiting a plea.
"Clara! Thank God," Jason said, rushing toward the sofa where I sat. He reached out to grab my hands, but I pulled them back, wrapping them tightly under the blanket. He froze, his hands hovering awkwardly in the air. "Clara, please, you need to listen to me. This whole thing is blown completely out of proportion. The hospital security called the police before I could get down there. It’s just a crazy misunderstanding."
"A misunderstanding, Jason?" I asked, my voice flat, devoid of the warmth he had spent seven years taking for granted. "She carved 'Homewrecker' into the hood of my car. She sliced through our daughter's car seat with a knife. She took selfies next to the wreckage. Which part of that did you misinterpret?"
Jason winced, his eyes darting toward my father, who remained completely motionless, watching him like a hawk watching a field mouse.
"Look, Chelsea is... she's unstable," Jason stammered, lowering his voice, attempting to project an intimacy that no longer existed between us. "She’s been dealing with severe personal issues. She misread my professional kindness for something else, and she had a mental break today. I’ve already contacted the company's legal team. We will fully compensate you for the car, Clara. We'll buy a brand new luxury SUV tomorrow morning. The top of the line. We can settle this without filing formal charges. If this gets out, it will ruin the firm's reputation, and it could jeopardize my path to senior partner."
I let out a short, humorless laugh. "You're still worried about your partnership? Jason, your assistant didn't have a mental break because of 'professional kindness.' She wrote 'He's mine' on my windshield. How long has she been yours?"
Jason’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled red. He drew himself up, trying to assert authority. "Clara, you're being hysterical because of the pregnancy. I admit, I made a mistake. We had a brief, meaningless lapse in judgment a few months ago. It’s over. I was already planning to fire her next week. But dragging this into a public courtroom will only hurt our family. Think about the baby. Do you really want our daughter's birth associated with a public scandal in the newspapers?"
"Don't you dare bring our daughter into this," I said, standing up from the sofa. Though I was heavily pregnant and wearing an oversized sweater, the authority of my family lineage radiated off me. "You didn't think about her when you authorized corporate funds to pay for Chelsea's luxury apartment. You didn't think about her when you let your mistress stalk my maternity schedule."
My father finally stood up from his leather chair. The sheer physical presence of the Police Commissioner made Jason instantly take a step back.
"Mr. Sullivan," my father began, his voice dropping into a register that made the windowpanes vibrate. "You seem to be under the impression that you are negotiating the terms of a corporate merger. Let me disabuse you of that notion immediately. Twenty minutes ago, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Chelsea Miller for felony vandalism, stalking, and reckless endangerment. The arrest team is currently entering your corporate headquarters."
Jason’s eyes widened in sheer terror. "What? No, Gavin, wait! You can't do that at the office! The board of directors is having an international investment review today!"
"And within the next hour," my father continued, completely ignoring Jason’s frantic interruptions, "a separate team of forensic accountants from the District Attorney's office will be arriving at your firm with a subpoena for all financial records tied to your executive expense accounts. My daughter's car belongs to a trust funded by the Potter estate. The attack occurred on municipal property monitored by public safety cameras. This is no longer a private domestic dispute. This is a state prosecution."
"Gavin, please! Clara, tell your father to stop this!" Jason pleaded, dropping all pretense of corporate dignity. He fell to his knees near the sofa, reaching for the hem of my blanket. "We can fix this! I love you, Clara! I love our baby!"
May you like
I looked down at the man I had loved for seven years, the man I had trusted with my future, and I felt absolutely nothing but profound disgust.
"Get out of my father's office, Jason," I said coldly. "The next time you see me, it will be across a courtroom aisle. And you better hire a very good lawyer, because you're going to need one."
