Chapter 4 - The Arraignment of the Innocent Face

The day of the formal arraignment arrived with an intense, freezing rain that matched the mood of the city. The central criminal courthouse was crowded with local journalists, attracted by the salacious headlines that had begun to leak: "Mogul’s Mistress Arrested in High-Society Vandalism Case."
I arrived through a private, secure judicial entrance, accompanied by Evelyn Reed and flanked by two plainclothes security officers assigned by my father. I wore a simple, elegant black maternity dress that clearly showed the advanced stage of my pregnancy. I wanted the judge, the jury, and the media to see exactly what Chelsea Miller had targeted—a mother preparing to bring life into the world.
When we entered the courtroom, Chelsea was already seated at the defense table. She was dressed in a drab, oversized navy blazer, her blonde hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, entirely devoid of the polished glamour she had displayed at the office. Her parents sat in the row behind her, looking wealthy, anxious, and deeply out of place in a criminal court.
Jason sat two rows further back, accompanied by his own separate criminal defense attorney. He didn't look at Chelsea, and she didn't look at him. The romantic alliance that had driven them to destroy my life had completely disintegrated the moment the cold iron of the handcuffs touched their wrists. They were now two drowning people trying to push each other under to stay afloat.
"All rise for Judge Margaret Henderson," the bailiff announced.
Judge Henderson, a veteran jurist known for her harsh stance on domestic violence and aggravated harassment, took her seat on the elevated bench. She adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents before her with an expression of profound distaste.
"We are here for the formal arraignment and bail hearing for the State vs. Chelsea Miller," Judge Henderson declared. "The charges include felony criminal mischief, stalking with intent to intimidate, and reckless endangerment of a minor child, in utero. State’s counsel, please proceed."
The Assistant District Attorney, a sharp young woman named Marcus Torres, stood up firmly. "Your Honor, the State requests that bail be denied entirely, or set at no less than two million dollars cash. The defendant engaged in a premeditated, highly violent attack on the victim's vehicle directly outside a medical facility. The digital evidence shows a pattern of targeted harassment, culminating in the explicit destruction of an infant's safety seat—an act clearly designed to inflict maximal emotional trauma on a woman in her third trimester of pregnancy."
Chelsea’s defense attorney, a high-priced litigator named Richard Sterling, quickly stood up to counter. "Your Honor, this is an unfortunate case of a young woman experiencing an emotional crisis due to an intense, manipulative relationship with her employer, Mr. Jason Sullivan. Miss Miller has no prior record. The damage, while regrettable, is purely property damage. The State is overcharging this case as an act of political theater simply because the victim happens to be the daughter of Police Commissioner Gavin Potter. We ask for a modest bail and immediate release to her parents' custody."
The mention of my father's name caused a murmur to ripple through the spectator gallery. Chelsea straightened up slightly in her chair, a faint, smug look returning to her face as her lawyer played the political card, attempting to frame her as an innocent victim of a powerful official’s vendetta.
Judge Henderson leaned forward, tapping her pen against the wooden desk. "Mr. Sterling, you claim this is purely a property damage dispute influenced by political pressure. Let’s look at the supplemental evidence submitted by the State just ten minutes ago."
The judge pressed a button on her desk, activating the large digital monitors mounted on the courtroom walls.
Instead of the security footage from the parking garage, a series of encrypted text messages flashed onto the screens. They were dated from three weeks prior, sent from Chelsea’s phone to a private number.

“If Jason tries to back out of the divorce plan, I’ll drop the anonymous tip to the SEC about the real estate invoices. I own him, and I’m going to take that pregnant bitch for everything she has. If she doesn't lose that baby from the stress, I’ll make sure she loses her mind.”
The entire courtroom went dead silent. Chelsea’s mother let out a sharp gasp, covering her mouth with her hands. Chelsea’s face turned an ashen grey, her eyes widening as she realized her private, digital leverage had been completely laid bare for the world to see.
