Chapter 2 - The Quarantine of Saint Jude's

The double glass doors of the East Wing smashed open as Silas Vance strode into the hospital corridor, flanked by two corporate lawyers in dark suits. Silas was thirty-six, handsome in a cold, polished way, with slicked-back hair and a custom-tailored Italian suit that screamed money.

He was the CEO of Vance Dynamics—or at least, that was the title printed on his business cards. The technology that made the company worth three billion dollars had been engineered entirely in my lab during our second year of marriage.

Odalys stepped out of Room 408 to meet him, her face transformed into a picture of gentle, exhausted sorrow.

"Silas," she whispered, leaning into his chest as he caught her in an embrace. "It was awful. She snapped. She started screaming that you were stealing from her, trying to ruin her... she struck her own stomach against the metal bed rails. I tried to hold her back, but..."

Silas patted her back gently, his eyes showing no grief, only cold, strategic satisfaction.

"You did well, Odalys," Silas murmured in her ear. "Is the agreement signed?"

"She refused," Odalys hissed softly, dropping the sweet facade for a fraction of a second. "She's stubborn. But Grayson is ready. Once she's moved to the psychiatric floor, we can execute the medical guardianship papers. You'll have full control of her voting shares by midnight."

"Good," Silas said, turning to Dr. Grayson, who stood at the nurse's station holding a clipboard. "Grayson, expedite the transfer. I want her isolated before her side of the family hears about this."

"Her family?" Grayson laughed nervously, tapping his tablet. "She only listed her father, Silas. The old mechanic from Akron. I wouldn't worry about him. He probably can't afford a plane ticket."

Suddenly, the lights overhead flickered violently.

The rhythmic hum of the hospital’s HVAC system stuttered and died. A low, synthetic tone echoed through the ceiling speakers, followed by the metallic click of heavy magnetic locks engaging simultaneously across every exit, stairwell, and elevator shaft in the six-story building.

"What is that?" Silas frowned, looking up at the emergency lights that had kicked on, casting a deep red hue across the marble floor. "A fire drill?"

Grayson tapped his tablet frantically. "No... the central server just shut down. My access codes are wiped. I'm locked out of the system!"

Outside the floor-to-floor glass windows of the lobby, the sound of heavy rotor blades cut through the humid night air.

Not one helicopter. Not two.

Four sleek, jet-black Sikorsky S-92 heavy transports hovered over the hospital's private helipad, their high-intensity searchlights washing over the glass façade, turning the red night into blinding daylight.

At the same time, six unmarked black armored SUVs breached the hospital’s perimeter gates, taking out the security booths without firing a shot. Dozens of men in crisp, dark tactical uniforms without national insignia spilled out, moving with terrifying, silent efficiency to secure every point of entry.

Inside the hallway, Silas’s two corporate lawyers backed away toward the wall, their faces pale.

"Silas... what is this?" Odalys gasped, clutching his arm, her eyes wide with sudden panic. "Is this the FBI?"

"No," one of the lawyers whispered, staring out the window at the tactical teams securing the courtyard. "The FBI doesn't move like that. That's private military... tier-one contractors."

The heavy steel fire doors at the end of the corridor groaned under immense hydraulic force. The magnetic seals shattered with a loud crack, and the doors slid open.

Six men stepped into the hall. They carried suppressed rifles kept at low-ready, their expressions cold and unreadable.

Behind them walked an old man.

He didn't wear a helmet. He didn't wear tactical gear. He wore a crisp, tailored suit over an iron frame, walking with a measured, slow rhythm that made the ground beneath him seem to yield to his presence. His hair was iron-grey, his face etched with lines of hard labor and old battles.

In his hand, he carried a simple, grease-stained mechanic’s wrench.

Silas stared at him, his mouth opening in complete, stunned disbelief.

"Marcus...?" Silas stammered, taking a step back. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get through security?"

Marcus didn't answer him. He didn't even look at Silas.

His eyes swept over the hallway until they landed on the door marked 408.

"Step away from the door," Marcus said quietly.

Dr. Grayson, attempting to preserve his authority, took a step forward, raising his clipboard defensively. "Listen here, old man! I don't know what kind of stunt you think you're pulling, but this is a private medical facility! You have no right—"

CLANG!

Marcus didn't break his stride. As he passed Grayson, his left arm whipped forward with blinding, brutal speed. The heavy steel wrench struck the side of Grayson’s knee.

Grayson let out a wet, sickening scream as his kneecap shattered, collapsing onto the marble floor, clutching his leg in agony.

Silas and Odalys stumbled back against the wall, paralyzed with fear.

Marcus stood before the entrance of Room 408. He reached out his hand, pushing the door open, and stepped inside.
