Chapter 3 - The Father's Inventory

The room was quiet save for my ragged breathing.

Nurse Priya stood beside my bed, holding a warm compress against my forehead, tears running down her cheeks. When the door opened, she pulled back in alarm, but when I saw the man standing in the doorway, the crushing weight in my chest suddenly lifted.

"Dad..." I choked out, tears finally breaking through my resolve.

Marcus walked to the side of my bed. The terrifying, crushing air that surrounded him vanished instantly, replaced by the warm, gentle presence of the man who used to teach me how to build radio transmitters in our small garage.

He reached out his large, rough hand—scratched and stained by decades of hard work—and gently cupped my cheek.

"I'm here, Amara," he whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "I'm here, my sweet girl."

He looked down at my exposed thigh, where the dark, swollen red welts from Odalys’s coat belt stood out against my pale skin. He looked at the bruised wrist where she had pinned me down. He looked at the fetal monitor, watching the numbers slowly drop back toward normal levels as my panic subsided.

Marcus bent down, pressing his lips to my forehead.

"Did they touch my grandchild?" he asked softly.

"She's... she's okay," I whispered, holding my stomach. "The contractions are slowing down. But Dad... Silas... they were going to put me away..."

Marcus smoothed my hair back, his face turning to stone.

"No one is putting you away, Amara," he said. "Your father is home."

He turned slowly and walked back into the doorway, standing on the threshold, looking out at the hallway where Silas, Odalys, and the two lawyers stood frozen under the rifles of four tactical operators.

Grayson was still weeping on the floor, clutching his ruined knee.

Marcus looked at Silas.

"Silas Vance," Marcus said, his voice echoing cleanly down the quiet corridor. "Four years ago, you came to my small house in Akron. You ate at my table. You asked for my daughter's hand in marriage. Do you remember what I told you that night?"

Silas swallowed hard, his face sweat-streaked, his hands trembling as he held Odalys behind him. "Marcus... please... let's talk about this rationally. Amara was having a medical emergency—"

"I told you," Marcus interrupted, his tone chillingly smooth, "that Amara was my only light in this world. I told you that if you ever hurt her, if you ever made her weep, there would be no police, no courts, and no salvation for you."

"Marcus, you don't understand!" Silas cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. "Vance Dynamics was failing! She was hiding financial records! Odalys was only trying to help negotiate—"

"Odalys Crane," Marcus said, shifting his gaze to the woman hiding behind my husband.

Odalys stiffened, her face pale as snow.

"Daughter of Arthur Crane," Marcus continued coldly. "Your father owes forty million dollars to a shadow syndicate in Geneva. He sent you to charm Silas, to manipulate his greed, so you could extract Amara's patents and settle his debt."

Odalys’s eyes opened wide in sheer, unadulterated horror. "How... how do you know that?"

"I am the man your father owes forty million dollars to," Marcus said quietly.

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the corridor.

Silas looked at Odalys, his mouth agape. "What?! Odalys... what is he talking about?"

"He's lying!" Odalys shrieked, her composure completely shattering. "Silas, he's a mechanic! He's nobody!"

Marcus reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted tablet. He tapped the screen twice.

"At 9:14 PM," Marcus announced, "Kade Capital's forty-two offshore accounts in the Grand Cayman Islands were liquidated by order of the Global Financial Enforcement Directorate. The funds—totaling $184 million—have been transferred to Amara’s personal trust."

Silas dropped to his knees as if he had been shot. "My... my money... my reserves..."

"At 9:18 PM," Marcus continued, "the board of Vance Dynamics received full criminal documentation of your corporate espionage, tax evasion, and attempted spousal murder. The board has unanimously removed you as CEO and appointed Amara Vance as sole executive authority."

"You can't do this!" Silas screamed, his eyes bloodshot, pounding his fists against the floor. "I built that company! I am Silas Vance!"

Marcus stepped forward, stopping three feet from where Silas knelt on the floor. He leaned down, looking directly into my husband's terrified eyes.

"You built nothing, Silas," Marcus whispered. "You lived in my daughter's shadow, and when you couldn't control her shine, you tried to extinguish it."

Marcus pointed to the end of the hall.

Two men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases walked forward, accompanied by four armed federal officers who had been brought in under private authority.

"These are federal marshals," Marcus said. "They are placing you and Miss Crane under arrest for corporate fraud, international money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and aggravated assault on a pregnant woman."

"No! Silas, do something!" Odalys wailed as the marshals grabbed her arms, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. "Silas!"

Silas didn't move. He sat on the cold floor, staring up at the mechanic from Akron, realization finally crashing down upon him like a tidal wave.

"Who... who are you?" Silas whispered, his voice broken.

May you like

Marcus looked down at him with cold pity.

"I am the man who let you pretend to be king," Marcus said softly. "And now, I am taking back the crown."
