Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Snow

The cold was the first thing that attempted to numb the agony, but it failed miserably. The frozen concrete beneath the porch steps bit through the thin fabric of Mia’s plush cream robe, but the burning sensation in her abdomen completely eclipsed the winter chill. Every breath she took felt like inhaling shattered glass. The snow beneath her hips was no longer a pristine, glittering white; it was absorbing a dark, terrifying crimson that expanded with every frantic beat of her heart.

"Please hurry," Mia whispered into the receiver of her phone, her fingers turning blue as she pressed the device against her ear. "She pushed me... I’m nine months pregnant. I’m bleeding."

"Ma'am, stay with me," the dispatcher’s voice cracked through the small speaker, remarkably steady but laced with a quiet urgency. "The paramedics are already en route. But ma'am... an officer is already reviewing your camera footage right now. Hold on."

Mia’s mind spun. How could they already be looking at the footage? She hadn't uploaded it. But then she remembered the advanced, automated smart-home security ecosystem she had installed three months ago. After catching Patricia rummaging through her mailbox and discovering unexplained withdrawals from her savings account, Mia had invested in a premium monitoring system. It featured high-impact sensors, facial recognition, and an automated distress-sharing link connected directly to local emergency services for rapid-response triggers. The system had registered the violent impact of her body hitting the steps, the shattering pitch of her scream, and the sudden departure of Evan’s white pickup truck. It had automatically flagged the event as a severe domestic assault in progress and pushed the live feed straight to the local police precinct.

As she lay there, the sound of distant sirens began to pierce the heavy, frozen air of the suburban neighborhood. The wailing grew louder, echoing off the bare winter trees.

"What did they see?" Mia wheezed, her hand trembling violently as she clutched her swollen stomach, trying to shield her unborn daughter from the creeping frost. "The dispatcher... what did the officer see?"

"Ma'am, the officer saw the entire sequence," the dispatcher replied, her tone hardening with professional resolve. "They saw the older female strike you. They saw the male load the wooden structure into the truck bed and drive away while you were on the ground. We have already dispatched multiple units to intercept the vehicle based on the license plate recognized by your system. The primary units are pulling into your driveway right now."

The blinding glare of red and blue lights illuminated the icy sheet covering the front yard. Two patrol cars tore up the driveway, followed immediately by an ambulance. The tires screeched against the frozen gravel. Doors flew open, and uniforms blurred into her field of vision.

"Ma'am! Don't move! We've got you," a male officer yelled, kneeling directly into the bloody snow beside her. He looked down at the crimson pool and immediately flagged his radio. "Dispatch, we need a priority trauma team ready at St. Jude’s Maternity Ward. Severe hemorrhaging due to a domestic fall. Maternal and fetal distress are critical."

Paramedics swarmed the porch steps, deploying a heated blanket and carefully sliding a backboard beneath her. Every slight movement sent a wave of blinding white pain through Mia’s pelvis. She gripped the paramedic’s sleeve, her eyes wild with terror.

"The crib..." Mia choked out, tears freezing instantly on her pale cheeks. "My dad built it... they took it..."

"We know, Mia. We know everything," the officer said, his face a mask of grim determination as he held her hand. "The cameras caught it all. Focus on your baby girl right now. Let us handle the monsters."

As they lifted her into the back of the ambulance, the doors slammed shut, enclosing her in a sterile world of bright lights and erratic heart monitors. The vehicle roared to life, speeding away from the house that was supposed to be her sanctuary, leaving behind only the dark red stain in the snow.
