Chapter 3 - The Arrest at Rachel's House

The smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls filled Rachel's pristine, white-paneled living room. Inside the makeshift nursery upstairs, Evan was using the same wrench he had used to dismantle the crib to put it back together. Patricia stood near the window, sipping a cup of expensive tea, directing him on exactly where to position the heavy walnut frame.
"A bit more to the left, Evan," Patricia instructed. "We want it centered under the chandelier. It looks so elegant here. It would have been an absolute waste to leave this in that tiny, dark spare room of yours."
"It really is beautiful," Rachel smiled, running her fingers over the smooth, hand-carved curves her father-in-law had spent months perfecting. "Mia's dad was an eccentric old man, but he certainly knew how to pick premium walnut. This would cost at least four thousand dollars in a boutique store in Manhattan."
Before Evan could tighten the final bolt on the side panel, the calm of the afternoon was shattered by a sudden, violent vibration that rattled the windowpanes.
Outside, the quiet suburban street was suddenly flooded with the harsh, strobing glare of multiple red and blue police cruisers. The vehicles didn't just park; they aggressively blocked the driveway, two troopers immediately flanking the perimeter while three others marched up the front walkway with heavy, deliberate steps.
"What on earth is that?" Patricia frowned, setting her teacup down with a sharp clatter. "Rachel, did you call for some sort of neighborhood security detail?"
Before Rachel could answer, a thunderous boom echoed from the ground floor as the front door was struck with a heavy, tactical strike.
"State Police! Open the door immediately!" a voice roared through a megaphone.
Evan dropped the wrench. It hit the hardwood floor with a loud, metallic clank that seemed to echo the sudden, frantic pounding of his heart. "Mom... what is going on?"
Patricia’s aristocratic composure fractured for a fraction of a second, but she quickly forced it back into place. She adjusted her fur coat and marched down the stairs, with Evan and Rachel following closely behind. "This is completely absurd," she hissed. "I will personally see to it that whatever idiot ordered this disruption loses their badge."
She threw open the inner door just as the troopers were preparing to breach the secondary frame.
"How dare you look to damage this property!" Patricia barked, her voice dripping with venom. "Do you have any idea who we are? My husband is a senior partner at—"
"Patricia Vance?" the lead trooper cut her off, his voice flat, icy, and entirely unimpressed. He pulled a heavy, laminated document from his vest pocket. "And Evan Vance?"
"Yes, that is my son," Patricia said, drawing herself up to her full height. "And I demand to know the meaning of this illegal intrusion."
"You are both under arrest," the trooper stated flatly.
Before Patricia could even draw breath to scream, the two troopers behind him moved forward with terrifying efficiency. One officer grabbed Patricia’s arm, twisting it firmly behind her back and snapping a pair of heavy, cold steel handcuffs around her wrists, right over the sleeve of her expensive fur coat. The second officer lunged past her, grabbing Evan, forcing him against the wall, and securing his wrists in one rapid, practiced motion.
"Get your hands off me!" Evan yelled, his face turning an ugly, panicked shade of purple as his cheek was pressed against the drywall. "What are the charges? We haven't done anything wrong! This is a mistake!"
"The charges are aggravated domestic assault, reckless endangerment of an unborn child, grand larceny, and corporate financial fraud," the lead trooper read from the warrant, his eyes locked onto Evan with absolute disgust. "Your property cameras captured the entire assault on your wife, Mia Vance. She is currently in critical condition at St. Jude's undergoing emergency surgery."
Rachel stood on the stairs, her face completely drained of color, her hands shaking violently. "Assault? No... Mom said she just tripped... Mom said she was faking it!"
"Your mother lied," the trooper said coldly, looking up at Rachel. "And if we find out you had any prior knowledge of this theft or the condition of the victim, you will be processed as an accessory after the fact. Officers, clear the house and secure the stolen property in the nursery as evidence."

"You can't do this!" Patricia shrieked as she was dragged down the front steps, her boots slipping on the very same type of ice she had used as a weapon against Mia just an hour earlier. "I am a prominent member of the country club! My lawyers will dismantle your careers by morning! Evan, tell them! Tell them she tripped!"
Evan didn't say a word. As he was shoved into the hard plastic back seat of the separate patrol vehicle, the harsh reality of his situation finally crashed down upon him. He looked out the window at his sister's house, then down at his handcuffed wrists. The toxic protection of his mother’s wealth had completely vanished, leaving him entirely exposed to the full, unyielding weight of the law.
