Chapter 5 - The Untangled EmpireThe legal proceedings that followed over the next three months were nothing short of a masterclass in corporate warfare.

With Marcus Cole leading the financial forensics team and our legal counsel tearing through Daniel’s digital footprint, the scope of his betrayal expanded far beyond a single weekend of attempted theft. We uncovered a multi-year scheme where Daniel had systematically funneled funds into secret accounts, hidden real estate purchases under fictitious LLCs, and orchestrated side deals with competing firms behind my back.

Rebecca proved to be his undoing. The moment she realized Daniel was facing up to fifteen years in federal prison for financial fraud and conspiracy, she turned on him with the speed of a sinking ship shedding ballast. She handed over every text message, every recorded phone call, and every digital signature proving that Daniel had not only known about the helicopter crash’s logistics, but had actively hoped I wouldn't survive it.

When the trial concluded in a federal courtroom in downtown Chicago, the judge didn't mince words.

Daniel Vance was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison with no possibility of parole for the first eight, alongside total asset forfeiture that stripped him of every penny, car, and luxury item he had acquired during our marriage. He walked out of the courtroom in handcuffs, his head bowed, looking like an aging ghost of the charismatic man who had charmed his way into my life nine years earlier.

As for me, I stood on the front steps of the courthouse under a crisp winter sun, drawing in a deep, clean breath of Chicago air.

Marcus walked out beside me, handing me a steaming cup of coffee from a nearby cart.

"Well," Marcus said, looking out toward the skyline of the city where our buildings towered against the blue sky. "You survived a helicopter crash, a hostile corporate takeover, and a parasitic marriage in less than ninety days. What’s next on the agenda?"

I took a sip of the coffee, feeling the warmth spread through my chest.

"Next," I said, a genuine, unburdened smile finally touching my lips, "we expand into the Midwest markets. And this time, I’m building a moat."
