Chapter 2 - The Arrival of Sterling

Heavy, synchronized boots echoed against the marble floor of the grand foyer.
A dozen men in tailored black suits swept into the mansion with military efficiency. Leading them was a man in his late sixties, wearing an immaculate charcoal suit, a silver-headed cane in his right hand, and an expression that could freeze oceans.
Arthur Sterling had arrived.
Behind him walked four uniformed officers from the State Police, along with three high-ranking federal agents carrying official badges and search warrants.
Vanessa gasped, stumbling backward until her heels caught on the edge of the Persian rug. She looked frantically between the armed entourage and Adrian, whose jaw was slack, his skin as gray as ash.
"Dad," I whispered, taking a trembling step forward.
Arthur Sterling ignored Adrian entirely. He rushed to my side, his hard, icy demeanor instantly melting into profound, heartbreaking grief as he saw the blood soaking through the back of my silk blouse. He took off his heavy cashmere coat and wrapped it gently around my shoulders, cradling my head in his hands.
"I’m sorry, Clara," my father murmured, his voice trembling with rare emotion. "I let you stay in this snake pit for too long. I thought he would see your worth."
"I see it now, Dad," I said softly, resting my forehead against his shoulder. "I see everything clearly."
"Who... who are you?" Vanessa stuttered, clutching her designer handbag like a shield. "You can't just break into a private residence! This is Adrian Vale's estate!"
My father turned slowly, his silver eyes locking onto Vanessa with cold, effortless disgust.
"This estate," Arthur Sterling announced smoothly, "was purchased under the name of the Sterling Family Trust. Adrian Vale has never owned a single brick of this building. He was merely a tenant living on my daughter’s mercy."
My father gestured to his legal counsel, a sharp-faced woman in a gray suit who immediately stepped forward with a stack of legal documents.
"Adrian Vale," the lawyer declared, her voice ringing clearly through the vaulted ceiling. "As of six minutes ago, all lease agreements for this property have been terminated. Furthermore, Sterling Global Holdings has filed a civil suit against you for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and asset stripping totaling $180 million."
Adrian dropped to his knees. The arrogance that had defined him for years evaporated in an instant.
"Clara..." Adrian whimpered, reaching out a trembling hand toward my hemline. "Clara, please... listen to me. I was confused. Vanessa tricked me! She lied to me about everything! She told me you were plotting against me!"
"Adrian!" Vanessa shrieked, her face twisting in shock. "How dare you?!"
"Shut up!" Adrian screamed back at her, his voice high-pitched and hysterical. "You parasitic gold-digger! You made me do this! You orchestrated everything!"
I watched them turn on each other like starved rats in a trap. Three years of marriage, three years of devotion, and this was the man I had sacrificed my true identity for.
"Officer," my father said, pointing his silver cane at Adrian. "That man assaulted my daughter with a weapon. There is blood on his hands, blood on his clothes, and the weapon is lying on the sofa."
The lead State Police officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic battery, and felony bodily harm. You have the right to remain silent."
"No! Wait! You don't understand!" Adrian yelled as his arms were roughly yanked behind his back. The metal cuffs clicked tightly over his wrists. "Clara, tell them! Tell them it was a marital dispute! Clara, please! I love you!"
I looked at him as the police dragged him toward the door.
"I don't know you, Adrian," I said quietly. "You're just a stranger who wore my husband's face."
As Adrian was dragged out into the rain, screaming my name, Vanessa tried to quietly slip along the wall toward the rear exit.
"Miss Vance," my father’s lawyer called out smoothly, stopping her in her tracks. "Don't run. The District Attorney’s office has already issued a subpoena for you regarding insider trading, corporate espionage, and tax evasion linked to Vale Enterprises."

Vanessa dropped her handbag. The champagne silk dress no longer looked elegant; it looked like a shroud.
My father turned to me, lifting me gently into his arms as if I were still a little girl. "Let's go home, Clara. Your real life is waiting."
