Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction

The private medical wing at Sterling Manor was quiet, warm, and smelled faintly of eucalyptus and fresh linen.

For two weeks, I remained under the care of top dermatologists and physical therapists. The physical wounds on my back healed slowly, turning from angry red welts into faint, pale lines. But the mental wounds—the betrayal, the public embarrassment, the sheer shock of Adrian's cruelty—required a different kind of healing.

My father didn't force me to work. He spent his mornings sitting by my bed, reading newspapers, eating breakfast with me, and making up for the three years we had spent apart while I played the humble wife in Adrian's shadow.

"You don't have to go back to the business world if you don't want to, Clara," my father said one morning, placing a hot cup of chamomile tea on my nightstand. "We have enough wealth to last ten generations. You can buy an island, paint, travel, or just rest."

I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the vast Sterling estate in upstate New York. The autumn leaves were turning brilliant shades of gold and crimson.

"No, Dad," I said, my voice firmer than it had been in years. "I spent three years shrinking myself so Adrian could feel tall. I'm done hiding."

My father’s lips curved into a proud, warm smile. "That’s my girl. So, what’s your first move?"

"I want Vale Enterprises," I replied. "Or what's left of it. I want to liquidate its corrupt divisions, rebrand it under Sterling Management, and turn it into a foundation for abused women and economic empowerment."

"It's already done," a cool, composed voice spoke from the doorway.

I turned to see Julian Thorne stepping into the room.

Julian was my father’s chief legal strategist and global director of operations. He was thirty-two, sharply intelligent, with deep dark eyes, a tailored dark blue suit, and a quiet aura of absolute competence. Before I had married Adrian, Julian and I had worked side-by-side on several major international acquisitions. He had been the only person who had openly opposed my marriage to Adrian three years ago.

“He’s a shallow climber, Clara,” Julian had warned me at my engagement party. “He doesn't see your brilliance. He only sees a prize he thinks he earned.”

I had ignored Julian back then, mistaking his warning for corporate arrogance.

"Julian," I said, feeling a slight flush touch my cheeks. "It’s good to see you."

"Welcome back, Clara," Julian said softly, stepping closer and placing a blue leather folder on my table. "I’ve taken liberty of finalizing the bankruptcy acquisition of Vale Enterprises. The court approved the restructuring this morning. The company belongs entirely to you now."

"And Adrian?" I asked.

Julian’s eyes hardened slightly. "His bail was denied due to flight risk. He’s currently held at the county correctional facility awaiting trial. His legal defense fund dried up three days ago after his personal accounts were seized for tax fraud."

"What about Vanessa?"

"Her pregnancy was a lie," Julian added calmly. "Faked medical documents to force you into a quick settlement. When the medical examiners checked her records upon arrest, the truth came out. Adrian found out yesterday in his holding cell. The guards had to separate them when they met in the attorney consultation room."

I let out a long, slow breath. The web of lies had completely unravelled.

"Thank you, Julian," I said, meeting his eyes. "For everything."

Julian looked at me, his gaze lingering for a second longer than professional courtesy required. "I told you three years ago that you belonged at the top of the world, Clara. I’m just glad you’re finally back where you belong."
