Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Confrontation

Two days passed in a blur of corporate theater.
Grant Ellison was riding the highest wave of his life. Media outlets across the Midwest had picked up the story of Ellison Freight’s impending $200 million valuation milestone, dubbing Grant “The Freight King of the Rust Belt.” Interviews were scheduled with Forbes, Crain’s Chicago Business, and local television networks.
Vanessa Moore was practically floating down the hallways, acting as if she were already the first lady of Chicago logistics. She had taken over my former place at Grant’s side, attending high-level meetings, redesigning the executive lounge, and openly flaunting her relationship with the CEO.
On the morning of the second day, I received an encrypted alert from Whitmore Capital’s legal division.
All preliminary funding documents have been officially flagged as ‘Under Comprehensive Forensic Review.’ The closing meeting scheduled for tomorrow at Whitmore’s downtown headquarters has been confirmed. Grant and his executive team are booked for 10:00 AM sharp.
I closed my laptop and walked over to my bedroom closet.
I didn't wear sweatpants or casual clothes. I opened a garment bag containing a custom-tailored, charcoal-gray Armani suit—the exact kind of power suit I wore when I sat on the other side of corporate acquisition tables as senior forensic director. I pinned my hair back into a severe, elegant chignon, slipped on a pair of designer heels, and checked my reflection in the mirror.

The woman staring back was no longer the quiet, invisible wife who had taken five strikes of a leather belt on a cream-colored rug.
She was Evelyn Whitmore. And the bill had finally come due.
