Chapter 6 - A New Horizon in Lake Forest

Three months later, the estate in Lake Forest looked entirely different.

The high wrought-iron gates were open. The overgrown hedges had been trimmed back, letting golden sunlight flood into the courtyard. Inside the master bedroom, the cream-colored rug had been ripped up and replaced with rich dark oak flooring, and every vestige of Grant Ellison’s miserable existence had been thoroughly scrubbed away.

I stood on the second-floor balcony, holding a warm mug of coffee, watching the autumn leaves drift lazily across the lawn.

Ellison Freight Systems no longer existed. Following the receivership seizure, Whitmore Capital had restructured the viable logistics infrastructure, absorbed the core technology patents, and liquidated the rest. Arthur Vance had received immunity in exchange for his full cooperation, while Vanessa Moore was currently facing federal indictment alongside Grant in a federal detention center in downtown Chicago, where they were discovering just how cold reality could be when the money ran out.

My phone chimed on the patio table beside me.

I picked it up and opened a message from my father:

Board meeting concluded in New York. The Q4 acquisitions are locked. Are you joining us for dinner in the city tonight, or staying at the estate?

I smiled, taking a sip of my coffee as I looked out over the sparkling expanse of the lake in the distance.

May you like

Staying here, Dad, I typed back. It’s my house now. And for the first time in five years, it actually feels like home.

I locked my phone, slid it into my pocket, and turned back toward the sunlight pouring through the open doors—ready for whatever chapter came next, entirely on my own terms.
