Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail

The red and blue emergency lights swept across the gated entrance of the Hidden Hills estate, painting the cobblestone driveway in rhythm with the pulsing sirens. Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies stepped out, their boots heavy against the pavement, while a paramedic unit followed closely behind.

Inside the dining room, the atmosphere had shifted from smug dominance to absolute panic. Genesis Miller stood near the grand marble fireplace, frantically waving her hands at her personal attorney over speakerphone. Jackson’s brother was hastily clearing shattered porcelain from the floor, attempting to destroy physical evidence before the officers reached the double front doors.

Jackson himself was pale, his posture collapsing as he hovered near the dining chair. "Claire, stop this right now," he hissed, his voice cracking with desperation as he took a step toward me. "You’re making a scene in front of my family! We can work this out like adults. Put the phone away!"

I didn't move. I stood in the center of the room, my cream-colored silk blouse stained with blood and gravy, my posture unyielding. The paramedic entered first, taking one look at the open wound along my temple and immediately pulling out sterile gauze.

"Ma'am, don't move," the paramedic said, applying pressure to my head. "That's a severe laceration."

Deputy Martinez stepped into the dining room, his eyes scanning the shattered plate, the blood dripping onto the white tablecloth, and the guilty expressions plastered across the faces of twenty wealthy socialites.

"Who threw the object?" Deputy Martinez asked, unholstering his notepad.

"She fell!" Genesis piped up immediately, stepping forward with her hands clasped. "Officer, my daughter-in-law had too much wine and lost her balance. She tripped into the dining table and hit her head on a serving dish. It was an unfortunate accident!"

I looked Deputy Martinez dead in the eye. "Check the high-definition security camera installed in the chandelier housing directly above the table," I said calmly. "And check the second camera mounted near the glass patio doors. Both shoot in 4K resolution and record audio to a cloud server."

Genesis gasped, her hand flying to her throat. She had forgotten that two months prior, she had boasted to the entire family about installing an ultra-modern security system throughout the main house.

Deputy Martinez turned to Jackson. "Sir, step away from the lady and put your hands behind your back."

"You can't arrest me!" Jackson screamed as the steel handcuffs snapped over his wrists. "Do you know who my father is?! Do you know how much money this family donates to the department?!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Deputy Martinez replied coldly, leading a shouting, frantic Jackson out of the estate in full view of his neighbors.

As the paramedics loaded me into the back of the ambulance to stitch my wound at the emergency room, Genesis leaned through the doors, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "You think you won, Claire? You just declared war on a family worth eighty million dollars. By tomorrow morning, you won't have a job, a reputation, or a dime left to your name."

I wiped a dry streak of blood from my cheek and smiled. "Genesis, you spent eighty million dollars buying expensive houses and cars. I spent ten years designing the structural foundations of commercial skyscrapers. I know exactly where the load-bearing walls are—and how to tear them down."
