Chapter 3 - The Freeze

By Thursday morning, Jackson had been released on a fifty-thousand-dollar bail posted by his mother. He immediately returned to the Hidden Hills estate, believing that his family’s team of high-priced lawyers would crush the domestic assault charges and intimidate me into dropping the case.
He had no idea that while he was sitting in a holding cell, I was systematically stripping his world of oxygen.
At 10:00 AM, Genesis Miller pulled her Bentley into the valet circle at the Rodeo Drive country club, flanked by three of her high-society friends. She stepped up to the front desk, flashing her black membership card to pay for her annual dues and a private luncheon.
The receptionist swiped the card. A red light flashed across the terminal.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Miller," the clerk said politely. "The transaction was declined."
Genesis chuckled dismissively. "That's absurd. Try it again. It has a five-hundred-thousand-dollar limit."
The clerk swiped it a second time. "Declined again, ma'am. In fact, our system shows a legal freeze notice attached to the account from the Superior Court of California."
Before Genesis could scream at the clerk, her phone buzzed frantically in her handbag. It was her wealth manager from Chase Private Client.
"Genesis, where are you?!" the manager panicked over the phone. "We just received a emergency freeze order from the District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division! All joint accounts associated with Miller Development LLC have been frozen pending a federal fraud investigation!"
"What are you talking about?!" Genesis shrieked, ignoring the stares of the club members surrounding her. "Unfreeze them right now!"
"We can't!" the manager yelled. "Your daughter-in-law, Claire, filed a formal whistleblower affidavit with the SEC three hours ago! She provided five years of cross-collateralized loan records proving that Jackson forged her electronic signature to siphon seven million dollars out of her architectural firm’s credit lines!"
At that exact moment, a flatbed tow truck pulled up to the curb outside the country club. Two city marshals stepped out, attaching heavy steel chains to Genesis’s Bentley.
Genesis ran out onto the pavement in her heels, her hair flying wild in the wind. "Stop! What are you doing to my car?!"

"Vehicle seizure order, ma'am," the marshal said, handing her a folded legal document. "This asset was purchased using funds drawn from a fraudulent commercial line of credit registered under Claire Miller’s firm. Have a nice day."
Genesis stood on the sidewalk of Rodeo Drive, clutching her designer handbag as her friends slowly backed away, leaving her standing entirely alone.
