Chapter 2 - The Audit and the ExposeBy 2:00 AM, Noah’s fever had dropped to a manageable 99.8 degrees thanks to intravenous fluids and targeted medication. The pediatrician confirmed it was a severe ear infection complicated by a viral strain, but he was out of danger.

I sat in the dim light of the private room, watching Noah sleep in the clear plastic bassinet beside my chair. The quiet hum of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room.

My phone vibrated on the small bedside table. It was a text from Sarah Vance, my lead attorney and childhood best friend.

Sarah: Julian just finished reviewing the financial statements you pulled from Daniel’s personal laptop. You were right. It’s not just rent money.

My fingers tightened around the phone. I replied immediately.

Elena: What did he find?

A moment later, my phone rang. I slid out of the room quietly, stepping into the empty, dimly lit hallway to answer.

“Elena,” Sarah’s sharp, decisive voice filled my ear. “Are you holding up okay? How is Noah?”

“He’s sleeping. His fever is down,” I said, leaning my back against the cool wall. “Tell me what Julian found.”

Julian Vance was Sarah’s older brother and one of the top forensic corporate accountants in the country. When I had first suspected Daniel’s financial dishonesty two weeks ago, Julian had agreed to run an discreet background audit on Daniel’s private accounts.

“Daniel didn't just pay Mia’s rent,” Sarah said, her tone laced with outrage. “He used funds from your joint home equity line—the line you opened to fund Noah’s future college trust—to co-sign a lease on a luxury townhome in Westbury under Mia’s name. Worse, he’s been routing client funds from his financial consulting firm through that same LLC to hide his personal assets before filing for what he thought would be a surprise divorce.”

A cold stillness settled in my stomach. “He was planning to file for divorce?”

“Yes,” Sarah confirmed. “We found a draft petition on his cloud drive dated three months ago. He was waiting until Noah turned one, planning to claim you were mentally unstable due to postpartum anxiety, clear out the joint accounts, and demand primary physical custody so he could claim child support from your executive salary at Sterling Developments.”

The sheer calculation of it left me breathless. While I was staying up all night nursing our newborn, blaming myself for being too tired, too distant, or not attentive enough to my husband, Daniel was working with Mia to systematically dismantle my life and steal my child.

“He thought I was weak,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “He thought because I kept quiet to keep the peace, I wasn't paying attention.”

“Well, he miscalculated horribly,” Sarah said coldly. “Julian has already notified the Board of Financial Ethics. Because Daniel co-mingled client funds with Mia’s LLC, his financial license is going to be frozen by noon tomorrow. He’s facing a full corporate audit.”

“What about Mia?” I asked.

“Mia Collins isn't just an innocent damsel in distress, Elena,” Sarah replied. “Julian dug into her background. She’s not an unemployed single mother with 'no one else.' She’s currently registered as an independent consultant for Apex Holdings—the predatory investment firm that tried to pull a hostile takeover on Sterling Developments two years ago.”

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying precision. Mia hadn't just stumbled into Daniel’s life at a charity gala eighteen months ago. She was an asset placed by Apex Holdings to extract insider financial information about my company through my husband’s compromised security. Daniel was so blinded by his own ego—so drunk on the feeling of being Mia’s 'hero'—that he had walked right into a corporate honeytrap, dragging our family’s security down with him.

“She used him,” I said.

“And he let her, because his pride demanded a woman who worshiped him instead of a wife who was his equal,” Sarah said flatly. “The emergency petition is ready, Elena. I’m filing it at the courthouse at 8:00 AM sharp. By the time Daniel wakes up tomorrow, he will be served with a temporary restraining order, an asset freeze, and a formal notice of corporate investigation.”

“Do it,” I said. “And Sarah?”
