Chapter 3 - Confrontation at the TowerAt 9:00 AM the following morning, I walked through the double glass doors of Sterling Developments' headquarters. I was wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my hair pinned back impeccably, carrying Noah in a sleek leather infant carrier. Teresa, Noah’s trusted nanny who had been with my family since he was six weeks old, walked beside me, carrying his diaper bag.

The news of the incident at the pediatric ER had already spread through the city’s high-society grapevine. When you are the Chief Operating Officer of a three-hundred-million-dollar real estate firm, your personal life is never entirely private.
As I stepped onto the private executive elevator, my assistant, Marcus, met us with an iPad in hand.
“Ms. Sterling,” Marcus said quickly, his voice tight. “Mr. Hart is in the building. He’s been waiting in your corner office for forty-five minutes. Security tried to stop him, but he used his spouse badge to clear the lobby gates before we could revoke his clearance.”
“Is he alone?” I asked, keeping my tone completely level.
“No,” Marcus hesitated. “Mia Collins is with him. She’s claiming to be his legal representative for financial affairs.”
A small, dark smile touched my lips. “Perfect. Have security stand by in the outer corridor, but tell them not to enter until I give the signal.”
“Understood, Ms. Sterling.”
I turned to Teresa. “Take Noah to the executive nursery on the 4th floor. Keep the doors locked until I come down.”
“Be careful, Elena,” Teresa whispered softly, pressing my hand. “He looked desperate when he came in.”
“Desperate men make mistakes, Teresa,” I said. “And I’m done paying for his.”
I stepped out onto the top floor. The plush carpets muffled my footsteps as I walked down the glass-walled corridor toward my corner office. Through the frosted glass windows, I could see Daniel pacing back and forth near my mahogany desk, gesticulating wildly, while Mia sat in one of my leather guest chairs, sipping a bottle of imported water.
I pushed the heavy door open. It swung shut behind me with a heavy, satisfying click.
Daniel spun around instantly. His suit was wrinkled from yesterday, his eyes bloodshot, and his tie undone at the collar. He looked like a man who hadn't slept a single minute.
“Elena!” Daniel took two aggressive steps toward me. “What the hell did you do to my accounts? My corporate credit card was declined at the parking garage! My firm’s access portal is locked!”
“Good morning, Daniel,” I said, walking calmly past him to place my leather portfolio on my desk. “Hello, Mia. I see you’ve made yourself at home in my office.”
Mia set her water bottle down, adjusting her sweater over her shoulders with that same practiced, helpless look. “Elena, please... Daniel was just trying to help me yesterday. You’re overreacting. You’re destroying his career over a simple misunderstanding—”
“Shut up, Mia,” I said softly, without even looking at her.
Mia blinked, completely taken aback by the absolute coldness in my voice.
“You don't get to speak in this room,” I continued, turning my attention to my husband. “Daniel, two hours ago, the State District Attorney’s office served a subpoena on Hayes & Hart Financial. They are seizing your servers, your transaction logs, and your personal communications.”
Daniel stopped dead. “What? On what grounds?”
“Embezzlement, corporate fraud, and co-mingling of client funds through 'Collins Consulting LLC',” I said, picking up a printed document from my desk and sliding it across the wood toward him. “Julian Vance finished his audit at dawn. You didn't just steal from our family’s joint accounts, Daniel. You stole two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from your own firm’s escrow accounts to cover Mia’s personal debts.”
Daniel stared at the paper. His hands began to tremble uncontrollably. “No... no, that’s impossible. I was going to replace that money next month! Once the Apex development deal went through—”
He cut himself off mid-sentence, realizing instantly what he had just admitted.
I smiled, a cold, sharp expression. “Once the Apex deal went through? The deal where Mia promised you a five percent finder’s fee if you leaked Sterling Developments' confidential bidding numbers for the waterfront district?”
Mia’s face went chalk-white. She stood up abruptly from the chair, her hand reaching for her designer handbag. “I think I should leave—”
“You’re not going anywhere, Mia,” I said, pressing a button on my desk intercom.
The office doors swung open immediately. Two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Unit, accompanied by two of my corporate security guards, stepped into the room.
“Mia Collins,” the lead officer announced, pulling a warrant from his coat. “You are under arrest for corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and grand larceny in connection with Apex Holdings.”
Mia shrieked as the officer grabbed her wrist, clicking cold steel handcuffs around her hands. “Daniel! Do something! Tell them!”
Daniel stood there frozen, looking back and forth between the police, Mia, and me. He was completely paralyzed, his mind unable to process how his carefully constructed power dynamic had collapsed in less than twelve hours.
“Daniel Hart,” the second officer said, stepping toward my husband. “You are also under arrest for grand embezzlement and wire fraud.”
As the officer pulled Daniel’s arms behind his back, Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide with absolute panic.
“Elena! Please!” he begged, tears finally welling in his eyes. “I made a mistake! I was tricked! Mia manipulated me! I love you! I love Noah! Please don't do this to our family!”
I walked slowly around my desk, stopping a few feet away from where he stood in handcuffs.
“You didn't care about our family when you ignored my texts while our baby was burning with a fever,” I said softly, reaching down to pick up my pen. “You didn't care about our family when you spent his college trust fund on another woman. You only care now because you got caught.”

“Elena!” he sobbed as the officers began guiding him toward the door.
“Goodbye, Daniel,” I said, turning my back on him and sitting down at my desk. “My attorney will see you at your arraignment.”
