Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The headquarters of Blackwell Enterprises sat on the forty-fifth floor of a sleek, glass skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan.

Usually, the executive offices were a hub of activity, filled with the quiet murmur of analysts, the clicking of keyboards, and the self-important stride of senior vice presidents. But on this Friday morning, the atmosphere was more akin to a wake.

Ryan Blackwell sat at the head of the polished mahogany conference table, his tie undone, his collar open. He hadn't slept in three days. The shadow of a dark beard covered his jaw, and his eyes were bloodshot, staring at the empty leather chairs that lined the room.

His mother, Victoria Blackwell, sat beside him. She was a woman in her late sixties, her face pulled tight by expensive plastic surgery, her neck adorned with three strands of South Sea pearls that seemed to weigh her down.

"This is an outrage, Ryan!" Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with a sharp, aristocratic fury. "The police arrested me! Me! In front of those... those commoners on the street! My family has lived in New York for four generations! We helped build the library! We don't get arrested!"

"Shut up, Mother," Ryan muttered, his voice hollow as he rubbed his temples. "Just shut up. We have bigger problems."

"Bigger problems?" Victoria shrieked. "Your father’s legacy is being dragged through the mud! That little... that little gold digger, Emma, she planned this! She lied to us! She made us believe she was some orphan from New Jersey while her father was sitting on a hundred-billion-dollar empire!"

"I didn't know," Ryan whispered, his hands shaking as he picked up a pen, only to drop it again. "How could I know? She never mentioned him. She never used his name. She lived in a studio apartment in Queens when I met her. She was working as a junior editor for a travel magazine! It doesn't make sense."

"It makes perfect sense," a cold, smooth voice said from the doorway.

Ryan looked up.

Richard Carter walked into the conference room. He was flanked by Arthur Pendelton and three other attorneys from Carter Global’s primary litigation team. Behind them stood two members of the Blackwell board of directors—men who, twenty-four hours ago, had been Ryan’s closest allies.

"Richard," Ryan said, standing up, his hands pressing flat against the table to steady his shaking knees. "This is my company. You have no right to enter this boardroom."

"I have every right, Mr. Blackwell," Richard said, taking his seat at the opposite end of the table. He didn't look at Ryan; he looked at the folder Arthur placed in front of him. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the board of directors held an emergency session. Due to the pending federal indictment against you, and the subsequent forty percent drop in our share price over the last seventy-two hours, the board has voted to terminate your contract as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

"You can't do that!" Victoria screamed, jumping to her feet. "My husband founded this firm! We own the voting shares!"

"You used to own the voting shares, Mrs. Blackwell," Arthur Pendelton said, his voice flat and clinical as he pulled a document from his briefcase. "Under the terms of your secondary debt restructuring agreement with Apex Financial, any active criminal indictment against the majority shareholder triggers an automatic margin call on your personal stock. Since your accounts are currently frozen by the federal government, you were unable to meet the call. Carter Global purchased those shares at nine-fifteen this morning. We now control seventy-four percent of the voting power."

Arthur looked at Ryan, his eyes devoid of sympathy. "You are no longer an officer of this company, Mr. Blackwell. You have no office here. You have no authority. And you have exactly ten minutes to leave the building before security removes you for criminal trespass."

"You did this," Ryan whispered, his eyes locking onto Richard Carter. He took a step toward the older man, his face twisting into a mask of pure, desperate hatred. "You used your daughter to trap me! You set me up!"

"You set yourself up, Ryan," Richard said, finally looking up from his folder. His eyes were cold, dark, and entirely empty of mercy. "You hit my daughter. You believed she was weak. You believed she had no one to protect her, so you treated her like a dog in her own home. You thought your money made you a god."

Richard stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over the polished wood of the table.

"I didn't need to trap you," Richard continued, his voice dropping into a register that made the board members near the door instinctively look away. "I simply waited for you to show the world what you really are. A thief. A coward. And a monster. Your company is mine. Your house is mine. And your future belongs to a federal judge."

"I’ll fight you, Richard!" Ryan yelled, his voice cracking as Arthur’s security team stepped into the room, their hands moving toward their belts. "I’ll take this to the media! I’ll tell them what you did! I’ll tell them you ruined a family business!"

"Go ahead," Richard said, turning his back on him as he walked toward the window. "The press is already downstairs. They’ve been waiting for you. Though I suspect they’re more interested in the video files we just released to the District Attorney’s office."

"What video files?" Ryan asked, his throat suddenly dry.

"The ones from your living room, Mr. Blackwell," Arthur Pendelton said, pointing to the door. "The ones where you explained to Emma exactly what you thought of the law. I believe the term you used was, 'I live in my own world.' We’ve decided to let the public see what that world looks like."

Ryan fell back into his chair, his face entirely white, as the security guards took him by the elbows and pulled him from the room. His mother’s shrieks of outrage faded down the marble corridor, leaving the boardroom in a quiet, clean silence once more.

Richard looked out over the city. The sun was beginning to break through the gray clouds, casting a bright, golden light over the steel and glass of Manhattan.

"Arthur," Richard said.

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Carter?"

"Get the car ready. I want to be at the hospital before Emma wakes up."
