Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Dark

The hospital room was quiet when Emma woke up. The soft, green glow of the monitors cast long shadows across the white walls, and the rain had returned, tapping gently against the glass of the window.
She shifted slightly in the bed, her hand moving to her stomach. The baby was quiet now, his small, rhythmic kicks replaced by a gentle, steady rolling movement that suggested he was finally asleep.
"Emma."
The voice came from the dark corner of the room, near the bathroom door.
Emma’s heart gave a violent, painful thrum against her ribs. She turned her head, her eyes straining in the dim light.
A figure stepped out of the shadows.
It wasn't her father. It wasn't the nurse.
It was Ryan.
He was wearing a nurse’s blue scrubs, his hair tucked beneath a surgical cap, a paper mask hanging loose around his neck. His face was gaunt, his eyes wide and bloodshot, carrying the frantic, unstable energy of a cornered animal.
"Don't scream," Ryan whispered, stepping closer to the bed, his hand reaching into his pocket. "If you scream, I swear to God, Emma..."
Emma’s hand instinctively found the emergency call button on the side of her bed. She pressed it, her thumb digging into the plastic, but nothing happened.
"I cut the line at the junction box down the hall," Ryan said, a desperate, hysterical smile touching his lips. "I know how this hospital is wired, Emma. My father built the west wing. I spent half my childhood playing in these corridors. You think your father’s security can keep me out of my own family’s hospital?"
"Ryan..." Emma said, her voice shaking as she tried to pull herself up against the pillows. "You shouldn't be here. The police... they’re looking for you."
"They found me," Ryan laughed, the sound sharp and wet in the quiet room. "They took my passport. They took my cards. They took my father’s company, Emma! Your father... he ruined me! He took everything I spent my life building!"
He took another step, standing right beside the bed. He reached out and grabbed her wrist, his fingers sinking into the purple bruises he had left there three days ago.
"You’re coming with me," Ryan hissed, his voice dropping into a low, venomous register. "We’re going to the garage. I have a car waiting. We’re going to find a doctor who doesn't care about your father’s name, and we’re going to deliver my son. Then we’re leaving this country."
"No," Emma said, her voice suddenly finding its strength. She looked him straight in the eyes, her gaze steady, her face free of the fear he had spent three years feeding on. "I am not going anywhere with you, Ryan."
"You don't have a choice!" Ryan yelled, his hand tightening around her wrist until her fingers went numb. "You think you’re a Carter now? You think your father can save you from me? I built you, Emma! I rescued you from that miserable, little Jersey life! You belong to me!"
"She belongs to no one," a voice said from the door.
Ryan froze.
Richard Carter stood in the doorway. He was alone, his coat damp with rain, his face set in an expression of such pure, cold anger that the room seemed to lose all its warmth.
"Richard," Ryan whispered, his grip on Emma’s wrist slipping by a fraction.
"Let go of my daughter, Ryan," Richard said, his voice quiet, steady, and carrying the weight of a physical blow.
"Stay back!" Ryan screamed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, steel pocketknife, his hand shaking so hard the blade caught the green light of the fetal monitor. "I swear to God, Richard, I’ll kill her! I’ll kill both of them if you don't let me leave!"
Richard didn't take a step back. He didn't flinch. He simply walked into the room, his eyes locked onto Ryan’s face, his expression entirely devoid of fear.
"You won't kill anyone, Ryan," Richard said, his voice dropping into a tone that was almost gentle. "Because you are a coward. You only hit people who can't hit back. You only threaten those you believe are weaker than you. But I am not weaker than you."
He took another step.
"Dad, no!" Emma cried, her heart pounding as she watched her father advance on the armed man.
Ryan let out a sharp, panicked shriek and lunged forward, the blade of the knife moving toward Richard’s chest.
But Richard was faster.
He caught Ryan’s wrist in mid-air, his large hand clamping down on the bone with the force of a hydraulic press. He twisted the arm outward, a sharp, clean crack echoing through the room as Ryan’s wrist joint gave way.
The knife clattered to the floor.
Ryan gasped, dropping to his knees, his face twisted in a mixture of agony and pure, humiliating shock. Before he could make another sound, the door to the room flew open, and Arthur Pendelton, followed by four armed police officers, rushed inside.
"Get him down!" the lead officer shouted, slamming Ryan onto the floor, his hands being pulled behind his back as the metal handcuffs clicked into place.
"He tried to kill her!" Victoria Blackwell shrieked from the hallway, where she was being held by two other officers. "He’s unstable! My son is innocent! It was that girl! She drove him to this!"
"Take them both away," the officer said, his voice flat as they dragged Ryan from the room, his face smeared with blood from where his nose had struck the linoleum floor.
Richard didn't look at them as they left. He knelt beside the bed, his hands wrapping around Emma’s face, his eyes searching hers with a desperate, fatherly panic.
"Emma," he whispered, his voice shaking. "Are you okay? Did he touch you?"
"I’m fine, Dad," Emma sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck, her tears finally falling in a hot, healing stream against his shoulder. "I'm okay. We're okay."

Beside them, the monitor continued to hum, its small, green screen displaying the steady, untroubled heartbeat of her son: 144 beats per minute.
The storm had passed. The lock had been broken. And for the first time in three years, Emma could finally breathe.
