Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Coup

The living room, usually a sanctuary of soft lighting and expensive art, felt like an execution chamber. Daniel stood between the door and the fireplace, his coat still glistening with rain. He was a man who built hospitals and understood the delicate mechanics of human survival; he was not a man who missed details. He was watching the screen, where the image of his mother—the woman who had raised him with lessons on grace and duty—was currently screaming about my "worthlessness" as she forced a pen into my hand.

Margaret’s face was a mask of cold, brittle porcelain. She stood her ground, even as the audio of her own voice echoed off the walls. "It’s a deepfake, Daniel. Elena is a genius with software; she’s been planning this."

Vanessa, however, was crumbling. The gold bracelet on her wrist, the one that had cut my lip, clinked against her glass as she fumbled to find a lie. She was looking at Daniel, waiting for him to play the role of the dutiful, naive son.

"The server logs, Daniel," I said, my voice raspy but steady. "The forensic data is already being synced to the board of Bellamy Medical. They’ve been alerted to the unauthorized transfer of voting shares. The emergency fund withdrawals were tracked using the internal audit software I wrote three years ago."

Daniel looked at me, his eyes dark with a grief that hit me harder than the physical pain. He took a step toward me, but I instinctively flinched, my body bracing for a blow that he would never deliver. He stopped instantly, his face twisting with horror as he realized that I was terrified of him, too—because I was terrified of the people he had let into our lives.

"You didn't just try to steal my company," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. He turned toward his mother. "You tried to break her."

"I did it for the family, Daniel!" Margaret shouted, dropping the pretense of grace. "She was an outsider! She didn't understand how this house works! She was draining our resources on her own pet projects, keeping you distracted, making you soft!"

"She is my wife," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "And you are currently trespassing in my home."

He reached for his phone, his thumb hovering over the screen. "I’m calling the police. Not for Elena. For you."

"You wouldn't," Margaret hissed, her eyes narrowing. "Think of the stock price. Think of the headlines. If you drag this out into the public, you’ll burn the entire Bellamy legacy to the ground."

"Then let it burn," Daniel replied.
