Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Predators

The police arrived within fifteen minutes. The scene that followed was a surreal, high-stakes collision of class and criminality. Margaret and Vanessa were escorted out in the back of a squad car, their designer coats stark against the flashing blue lights of the cruiser.
Daniel spent the night at the hospital with me. He didn't say much, but he held my hand—the one that wasn't bruised—with a desperate, anchoring grip. He asked me everything. He asked about the weeks he’d been away, the threats they’d made, the hunger, the isolation. He hadn't known. He had trusted his mother to "watch over me" while he was dealing with the firm’s international expansion.
"I gave them the keys to the kingdom, Elena," he whispered at 3:00 AM, his head in his hands. "I thought… I thought blood was safe."
"Blood is a risk, Daniel," I said. "I should have told you sooner. I was afraid they’d reach you first."
The next morning, the fallout was instantaneous. The news of the arrests hit the Chicago Tribune by 7:00 AM. Bellamy Medical Holdings’ board of directors issued an immediate statement, suspending any pending share transfers and launching an internal investigation into the "irregularities" of the past week.
But as I sat in the hospital bed, the reality of the situation settled in: I was the primary witness in a criminal conspiracy case. My own mother-in-law and sister-in-law were facing charges of assault, kidnapping, and financial fraud. And I was the one who had to hold the line.
When I was finally discharged, Daniel drove me home. But he didn't take me to the house. He took me to a private, secure apartment in the city.

"They’re out on bail, Elena," he said, locking the door and turning to me. "Margaret has resources we haven't even mapped yet. She’s calling every judge, every favor, every contact she has. She wants to paint you as the villain. She wants this to go to a jury trial where she can frame you as a gold-digger."
"Let her," I said, my gaze shifting to the laptop I had brought with me. "She thinks I’m a victim. She doesn't realize I’ve been tracking their offshore accounts for months."
