PART 2 – THE FIRST DOMINO FALLS

Daniel spent the rest of the evening giving a statement to the detectives.
Because hundreds of guests had witnessed the slap and the hotel's security cameras had recorded everything, there was little room to deny what had happened.
"It was a heated moment," Daniel insisted.
"I never meant to hurt her."
One detective closed his notebook.
"Intent doesn't change the facts."
As Daniel walked out of the hotel shortly after midnight, reporters had already gathered outside.
Cameras flashed.
"Mr. Hale!"
"Is it true you assaulted your bride during the reception?"
"Are you being investigated?"
Daniel lowered his head and pushed through the crowd.
Inside a waiting car, Vivian slammed the door shut.
"This is all Claire's fault!"
Daniel stared out the window.
"No..."
Vivian turned sharply.
"What did you say?"
"I hit her."
"For me."
Silence filled the car.
For the first time in years, Daniel wondered whether he had spent his life confusing obedience with loyalty.
Across the city, Claire sat in Naomi's office with a cup of untouched tea.
The adrenaline had finally faded, leaving only exhaustion.
Naomi placed another folder on the table.
"I've already filed for an emergency protective order."
Claire nodded.
"And the divorce?"
"It will be filed first thing tomorrow morning."
Claire looked down at the wedding ring lying beside the documents.
Less than twelve hours earlier, she had believed she was beginning a new life.
Now her marriage was already over.
Naomi spoke gently.
"Do you regret stopping the ceremony?"
Claire gave a faint smile.
"The ceremony wasn't stopped."
She looked toward the window.
"It simply revealed the truth before it was too late."
The following morning, headlines spread across every major news outlet.
Bride Slapped During Wedding Reception.
Luxury Hotel Security Footage Preserved.
Business Executive Files for Divorce Hours After Wedding.
Although Claire never spoke to the press, the story traveled quickly through the city's business community.
Several investors called Bennett Development, expressing support.
Others quietly began asking questions about the Hale family.
At Hale Construction, the atmosphere was tense.
Employees whispered as Daniel entered the building.
Some looked away.
Others stared openly.
His assistant hurried toward him.
"Mr. Hale..."
"What now?"
"The bank is here."
"The bank?"
"And two members of the board."
Daniel frowned.
"They're waiting in the conference room."
Inside, Richard Hale sat across from representatives of First National Commercial Bank.
One banker adjusted his glasses.
"We've completed a routine review of your company's financial position."
Richard forced a smile.
"Is there a problem?"
"There may be."
The banker slid several documents across the table.
"We've discovered significant undisclosed liabilities."
Daniel glanced at the papers.
"What liabilities?"
Before anyone answered, another executive entered carrying fresh reports.
"Our largest supplier has suspended shipments until further notice."
Richard stood.
"On what grounds?"
"They're concerned about the company's stability after last night's incident."
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"They're reacting because of a family dispute?"
"No," the executive replied quietly.
"They're reacting because investors are losing confidence."
Meanwhile, Claire arrived at Bennett Development Headquarters.
Employees greeted her warmly.
"Good morning, Ms. Bennett."
She smiled.
"Good morning."
Inside the boardroom, directors stood as she entered.
One board member spoke first.
"We've reviewed the situation."
Claire took her seat.
"I assume everyone has seen the news."
Several people nodded.
"The market opened twenty minutes ago," the Chief Financial Officer said.
"Our share price has actually increased."
Claire looked surprised.
"Why?"
"Investors believe you acted decisively."
Another director smiled.
"They're calling it an example of strong leadership."
Claire sighed softly.
"I never wanted my wedding to become a business headline."
"No," the chairman replied.
"But you showed the world exactly how you handle abuse."
That afternoon, Daniel finally received the divorce petition.
He opened the envelope with shaking hands.
The first page contained only a few words.
Petition for Dissolution of Marriage
Attached was another notice.
Claire was invoking the misconduct clause in the prenuptial agreement.
Every financial benefit Daniel expected through the marriage was immediately void.
He sank into his chair.
"This can't be happening..."
Across town, Vivian wasn't giving up.
She marched into Bennett Development without an appointment.
"I need to see Claire."
The receptionist smiled politely.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Hale. Ms. Bennett isn't available."
"I don't care."
Security stepped forward before she could move any farther.
Just then, Claire exited the executive elevator.
Their eyes met across the lobby.
Vivian straightened her designer jacket.
"You've embarrassed my family enough."
Claire remained calm.
"No, Vivian."
"You embarrassed your family."
"You could still fix this."
"How?"
"Withdraw the divorce."
Claire almost laughed.
"You demanded my wedding gifts."
"You slapped me."
"And you expected me to apologize."
Vivian's expression hardened.
"You'll regret making enemies of us."
Claire stepped closer.
"I've never been afraid of people who mistake intimidation for strength."
Without another word, she walked past Vivian.
Security escorted the older woman outside.
Employees throughout the lobby quietly applauded.
That evening, Naomi called Claire.
"We've uncovered something."
Claire looked up.
"What is it?"
"During our financial review, we found evidence that Hale Construction has been hiding millions of dollars in debt."
Claire frowned.
"Are we certain?"
"Completely."
Naomi slid a folder across the desk.
"And there's something even more interesting."
Claire opened it.
Inside were records showing repeated transfers from company accounts into a private account belonging to Evan Hale.
She slowly raised her eyes.
"So the gambling debts..."
Naomi nodded.
"Were being paid with company money."
Claire closed the folder.
"Does Daniel know?"
"We don't think so."
Claire stared out the window as the city lights flickered below.
She had believed the Hale family was simply greedy.
Now she realized the truth was far worse.

Their entire business empire had been built on lies.
And she had just uncovered the first piece of evidence that could bring it all crashing down.
