Chapter 2 - The Empty Fortress

By 4:00 AM, I was checked into a quiet, boutique hotel downtown under an assumed name that Marcus had arranged. My face was heavily bandaged, but the throbbing pain had subsided into a dull, manageable ache, courtesy of the prescription painkillers Aris had given me.

I lay awake in the dark, staring at the ceiling, listening to the soft hum of the city below. For three years, I had let Helen and Violet run rampant in my father's house. I had let Helen believe that her marriage to my father entitled her to his estate. I had let Violet wear my mother’s old jewelry, drive my cars, and treat me like an unwanted house guest in the home I legally owned.

They believed I was weak because I chose peace over conflict. They believed my silence was submission.

They forgot that my father had built a real estate empire from nothing. He had taught me how to read contracts before I could read novels. He had left me a fortress, and tonight, I was going to dismantle their access to it brick by brick.

At 7:00 AM, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Marcus:

The emergency injunction has been signed by Judge Higgins. The eviction notice is active. The movers are scheduled for 9:00 AM. Helen and Violet’s joint credit accounts, which are funded by your father's estate trust, have been frozen. The storm is ready, Nora. Give the word.

I stared at the message, a slow, cold feeling of triumph wash over me.

Execute, I replied.

While Helen and Violet were out—no doubt celebrating Violet's upcoming "interview" and shopping with the credit cards they assumed I was still funding—a quiet, highly organized invasion took place at the Greenwich estate.

A fleet of three unmarked professional moving trucks pulled up the long, winding driveway of the house. Led by Marcus Sterling himself, a team of twenty professional movers entered the house using the master key only I possessed.

Every piece of furniture that had belonged to my father, every painting he had collected, every piece of silver, every custom rug, and every appliance down to the high-end espresso machine was carefully wrapped in protective bubble wrap and loaded into the trucks.

I had instructed them to leave nothing but the bare walls and the empty floors.

But we didn't stop there. The smart-home integration system, which controlled the heating, the air conditioning, the security locks, and the high-speed internet, was entirely under my personal account. With a few taps on my phone from my hotel room, I terminated the utility contracts for the property effective immediately. The electricity remained on only enough to power the security cameras and a single spotlight in the foyer.

By 2:00 PM, the house was no longer a home. It was a cold, hollow shell of timber and stone, echoing with the ghosts of a family that no longer existed.

And standing in the center of the empty, unheated foyer, waiting in a perfectly tailored dark gray charcoal suit, was Marcus Sterling. In his hands, he held a blue leather folder containing the legal destruction of Helen and Violet’s lives.
