Chapter 3 - The Man in the Suit

At 4:30 PM, the sound of a luxury SUV pulling up the gravel driveway echoed through the empty house.

Inside the vehicle, Helen and Violet were laughing. They had spent the afternoon at an upscale boutique in Greenwich, selecting a three-thousand-dollar designer suit for Violet’s interview—charged, they assumed, to the estate card. They had also stopped by a high-end salon, where Violet had her hair and nails done to complete the "look of success" she believed she deserved.

"I’m telling you, Mom, Nora is a coward," Violet laughed, tossing her shopping bags into the backseat. "She didn't even try to fight back. By next week, I’ll have her lease signed over to me, and we can finally get rid of her for good."

"She’s just like her father," Helen sneered, her voice dripping with decades of buried resentment. "Soft. Easily managed. He thought he was so smart leaving everything in trusts, but he didn't realize that a mother always knows how to squeeze her children."

They stepped out of the car, their arms laden with designer shopping bags, and walked up to the grand front porch. Helen reached out and pressed her finger against the biometric lock on the heavy oak door.

The scanner flashed red.

Access Denied.

Helen frowned, rubbing her finger against her designer trousers and trying again. "Stupid machine. Nora must have messed with the settings before she left."

She pulled out her physical key and slid it into the brass lock. It turned, but when she pushed the door open, a wave of freezing cold air hit her in the face. The interior of the house was entirely dark, save for a single, stark spotlight shining directly down onto the polished oak floor of the grand foyer.

"What in the world..." Violet whispered, stepping inside.

Her voice echoed. It didn't just carry; it bounced off the bare walls, ricocheting through the empty rooms like a hollow drum.

Helen stepped into the foyer, her designer heels clicking sharply against the wood. She looked to the left. The formal living room, which had been furnished with custom-made velvet sofas and a grand piano, was completely empty. To the right, the dining room, once dominated by a twelve-seat mahogany table and a Baccarat crystal chandelier, was a barren wasteland of bare plaster.

"Nora!" Helen screamed, her voice cracking with a sudden, icy panic. "Nora, what did you do?!"

"Nora isn't here, Mrs. Crawford," a calm, professional voice replied from the shadows.

Helen and Violet gasped, spinning around.

From the dark corridor leading to the kitchen, a man in a perfectly pressed three-piece suit stepped into the circle of light. He was holding a blue leather folder, his expression entirely devoid of warmth or pity.

"Marcus?" Helen stammered, her hand flying to her chest. "What are you doing in my house? Why is the furniture gone? Where is my daughter?!"

"First of all, Helen, this is not your house," Marcus said, his voice smooth, echoing with a quiet, devastating authority. "This property belongs entirely to the David Carrington Trust, of which Nora Carrington is the sole trustee and beneficiary. Your right of occupancy was entirely discretionary, based on a personal lease agreement that has just been legally terminated."

"You can't do this!" Violet shrieked, dropping her shopping bags. "We live here! You can't just throw us out!"

"Actually, Violet, we can," Marcus replied, opening the blue folder. "I am serving you both with an emergency eviction notice, signed by Judge Higgins of the State Supreme Court at 8:30 this morning. You have exactly thirty minutes to gather your personal clothing and leave the premises."

May you like

"Thirty minutes?!" Helen roared, her face turning an ugly, mottled red. "I am David’s widow! I have a right to his estate! I will sue you, Marcus! I will sue Nora until she has nothing left!"

"I wouldn't advise that," Marcus said, pulling a second document from the folder. "Because while you were out shopping with cards that have already been frozen for unauthorized use, the local police department was reviewing a very interesting piece of security footage."
