Chapter 3 - THE WEB UNRAVELS

At 11:15 AM, Captain Bradley Miller was sitting in his corner office at the 12th Precinct, feet propped on his mahogany desk, admiring a gold Rolex that Julian Sterling had sent him as an advance bonus.
He took a sip of his bourbon-laced coffee and chuckled to himself, remembering the look on Elena Vance’s face when he had threatened her son. *Amateurs,* he thought. *Every single one of them thinks the law protects them. The law belongs to whoever writes the checks.*
The door to his office didn't open; it was blown off its hinges.
Four tactical agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by agents from the State Internal Affairs Special Operations Division, stormed into his office with assault rifles raised.
"BRADLEY MILLER! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM! INTERLACE YOUR FINGERS BEHIND YOUR HEAD! NOW!"
Miller choked on his coffee, sputtering as his chair flipped backward, sending him crashing onto the linoleum floor. "What the hell is this?! I'm the precinct commander! Do you know who I am?!"
A stern-faced woman in a navy windbreaker stepped over his desk, flashing a gold badge. "Special Agent Sarah Lin, Public Corruption Task Force. Bradley Miller, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, witness tampering, extortion, and felony conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping under color of authority."
"Kidnapping?!" Miller screamed, his face turning an apoplectic shade of purple as two agents wrenched his arms behind his back, ratcheting cold steel handcuffs into his wrists with brutal efficiency. "That's absurd! I executed a legal protective custody order signed by child services!"
"The social worker already cracked twenty minutes ago, Miller," Agent Lin said coldly, leaning down and ripping the gold Rolex off his wrist, dropping it into an evidence bag. "She gave us your encrypted texts with Evelyn Vance and Julian Sterling. We have your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. We have the wire transfers totaling four hundred thousand dollars over the last six months. And we have the audio recording of you threatening to have a seven-year-old child murdered in a state home if his mother didn't sign."
Miller’s face went entirely white. The arrogance vanished, replaced by the sheer, sickening terror of a predator who suddenly realizes he is caught in a steel trap. "Audio...? What audio?! That room was clean!"
"You didn't check her collar, Captain," Lin whispered with utter disgust. "Elena Vance didn't just record you. She broadcasted you live to the Department of Justice’s primary secure server."
As they dragged Captain Miller through his own precinct in front of sixty stunned patrol officers and three television news crews that had mysteriously arrived outside the front doors within minutes of the raid, Miller caught sight of a black town car idling across the street.
Behind the tinted glass, Christopher Ward raised a single finger in salute, then rolled up the window and drove away.

Meanwhile, at the flagship boutique of *Maison Vanessa* on Riverdale’s high-end fashion boulevard, Vanessa Vance was in the middle of a high-profile press preview.
She stood beneath glittering chandeliers, surrounded by champagne flutes, fashion bloggers, and the city’s elite socialites, holding up a shimmering evening gown from her autumn collection.
"I designed this piece with the modern, resilient woman in mind," Vanessa purred, tilting her head for the flashing cameras. "It’s all about purity. Elegance. Rejecting the vulgar, chaotic elements of the lower classes."
"Speaking of lower classes, Ms. Vance," a voice cut through the crowd.
Vanessa frowned, her manicured smile freezing. A middle-aged man in a trench coat stepped forward, accompanied by two armed agents from the Department of Homeland Security and an elderly, sharp-eyed Italian woman.
"What is the meaning of this interruption?" Vanessa demanded, looking to her private security guard. "Remove these people immediately!"
The security guard didn't move; his radio was already crackling with frantic reports from his supervisor stating their company's operational license had just been revoked by the state licensing board.
The Italian woman stepped forward, her voice echoing through the opulent boutique. "My name is Francesca Bellini. Four months ago, your representatives broke into my studio in Milan, copied my entire spring catalog, and threatened to ruin my family if I spoke to the press."
Francesca tossed a heavy leather sketchbook onto the display table. Beside it, she laid out the exact blueprints, fabric swatches, and sketches that matched Vanessa’s dresses stitch for stitch.
The room gasped. Smart-phone cameras zoomed in on the open books.
"This is ridiculous!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice turning shrill. "This woman is an extortionist! Security!"
"Homeland Security Investigations, Ms. Vance," the man in the trench coat announced, pulling a federal warrant from his pocket. "We are executing a search and seizure warrant for twenty-two crates of luxury textiles smuggled into the Port of Riverdale under falsified shipping manifests. Furthermore, the Italian Ministry of Culture and Commerce has issued an international injunction against your entire brand for intellectual property theft and commercial fraud."
Before Vanessa could speak, her phone rang violently.
She fumbled for it, seeing Julian Sterling’s name on the screen. She hit speaker in her panic.
"Julian! Julian, you have to help me! The feds are in my boutique! They're taking the dresses!"
Julian’s voice didn't sound like his usual smooth, commanding self. It was frayed, edged with panic and cold fury.
"Vanessa, shut up and listen to me," Julian snapped over the line. "Our credit lines just evaporated. Bancorp called in a eighty-million-dollar margin call on my holding firm twenty minutes ago. My offshore trading licenses have been suspended by the SEC. Someone is executing a coordinated corporate decapitation against us!"
"What?!" Vanessa gasped, dropping to her knees on the plush carpet as federal agents began slapping bright red *SEIZED UNDER FEDERAL AUTHORITY* stickers across her designer mannequins. "Who could do that?! Who has that kind of power?!"
"It’s your sister," Julian whispered, the terror in his voice finally breaking through. "Elena didn't just vanish eight years ago. She was Vanguard Sovereign’s Chief Field Strategist. She built the financial architecture that controls half the private banks in the hemisphere. She’s coming for the boy, Vanessa. And she is going to destroy every single one of us."
The call went dead.
Vanessa looked up at the flashing cameras of the fashion press. The bloggers weren't admiring her dresses anymore; they were livestreaming her ruin to four million viewers across the world.

And across town, in the high tower of Aurelia, Evelyn Vance was about to receive a visitor of her own.
