Chapter 4 - THE SIEGE OF STERLING MANOR

The iron gates of the Sterling Country Estate were designed to withstand a military truck. The stone pillars were reinforced with steel cores, and the surveillance cameras mounted on the brick walls used infrared sensors that could detect a rabbit in the brush five hundred yards away.
At 2:00 PM, a single black armored tactical transport did not stop at the gate.
It rammed through it at sixty miles per hour.
The sound of shattering iron and tearing steel cracked across the silent, manicured estate like thunder. The heavy gates were torn from their concrete moorings, spinning across the asphalt driveway as the transport roared up the private avenue toward the main house.
Inside the transport, six operators from Aegis Tactical sat in silence, their assault gear blacked out, their faces covered by ballistic masks.
I sat at the front, wearing dark tactical combat fatigues, my hair pulled tight into a combat braid. In my hands, I held a lightweight breaching carbine. My heart beat with the slow, terrifying rhythm of absolute focus.
"Command," the team leader, a veteran named Vance-loyalist Kane, spoke through the closed comms. "Perimeter security is scattering. Private guards are disoriented. Non-lethal force authorized?"
"Non-lethal unless they raise a weapon against Leo," I replied, my voice steady. "Anyone who stands between me and my son gets put into the dirt."
The transport screeched to a halt on the grand cobblestone turnaround in front of the three-story stone mansion.
Before the dust settled, Kane kicked the rear doors open. We moved in a seamless, lethal wedge formation across the terrace. Julian Sterling’s private security guards—hired through a third-rate private contractor—tried to form a line across the grand oak double doors.
They didn't last ten seconds.
Flashbangs detonated with deafening cracks, blinding the guards in flashes of white light. Aegis operators moved like shadows, delivering precise, devastating strikes—disarming, sweeping legs, and zip-tying guards to the balustrades before they could even draw their batons.
I kicked the shattered oak front door open and walked into the grand marble foyer.
Standing at the top of the sweeping spiral staircase, clutching a silver-plated revolver with hands that shook like dry leaves, was Julian Sterling.
He was thirty-four, impeccably dressed in a bespoke cashmere sweater, but his face was slick with sweat, his eyes wide and bloodshot.
"Stay back!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking as he aimed the revolver down at me. "Stay back, Elena! I have fifty lawyers on the line! This is private property! This is home invasion!"
I didn't stop. I walked up the marble steps, one slow, deliberate step at a time, my carbine pointed straight at his sternum.
"Julian," I said softly, my voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. "You have five seconds to lower that weapon before my sniper puts a high-caliber round through your shoulder."
A red laser dot materialized on Julian’s chest, hovering directly over his heart. A second dot appeared on his forehead.
Julian looked down at the red dots, his breath catching in his throat. The gun slipped from his sweat-slicked fingers, clattering down the marble stairs, bouncing harmlessly to the bottom.
"She... she told me it was easy," Julian stammered, falling back against the mahogany wall, sliding down into a pathetic heap. "Evelyn told me Leo was just an unwanted child... that you were weak... that you would accept a financial settlement and disappear. I was just trying to protect my investments, Elena! I didn't want the kid hurt!"
"You watched my son's nose get broken for twelve million dollars," I said, stepping over him without breaking stride. "You are not an investor, Julian. You are a parasite."
I turned the corner of the second-floor gallery and stopped in front of the master suite.
The door was locked. Kane stepped forward with a hydraulic ram, but I held up a hand.
I turned the brass handle with a gentle, deliberate touch. It resisted. I stepped back and kicked the lock once with the reinforced heel of my boot. The door splintered open.
Inside, the room was dimly lit.
Dr. Kenneth Hayes was standing near the bathroom, packing a medical bag with trembling hands.
And there, curled into a tight ball on an enormous king-sized bed, surrounded by dark silk sheets that didn't belong to him, was Leo.
His face was covered in fresh white bandages. His small hands were clutching his little plush dinosaur to his chest, his eyes wide with terror as the door burst open.
"Mommy...?" he whispered, his tiny voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioner.
The cold, ruthless commander who had dismantled an empire in six hours dissolved instantly.
I dropped my weapon to the floor, fell to my knees beside the bed, and gathered my little boy into my arms.
"I'm here, baby," I sobbed, tears finally pouring down my face as I buried my nose into his hair. "Mommy’s here. I've got you. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Nobody."
Leo wrapped his little arms around my neck with all the strength left in his fragile body, weeping into my shoulder, his tears wetting the tactical vest.
"Mommy, they told me you went to jail," he cried, his little body shaking with violent tremors. "They told me you didn't want me anymore because I got blood on Grandma’s floor..."
A wave of pure, white-hot fury surged through my veins, but my touch remained feather-light as I lifted him into my arms, wrapping him securely in a warm wool blanket.
"They lied to you, Leo," I whispered, kissing his bandaged cheek. "Mommy would tear down the sky before she ever left you."
I turned toward Dr. Hayes, who was cowering against the wall.
"You signed a medical report claiming I abused my child," I said, my voice dropping into that terrifying, icy calm.
"They... they paid me fifty thousand dollars!" Hayes whimpered, falling to his knees. "I have debts, Ms. Vance! Please! I'll recant! I'll sign whatever you want!"
"You will recant under oath in front of the State Medical Board and the grand jury," I told him. "And then you will spend the next ten years practicing medicine in a federal penitentiary."
I carried Leo out of the bedroom, down the grand staircase, stepping past Julian Sterling, who was now handcuffed and weeping on the floor of his own foyer.
Outside, the second black transport was waiting, accompanied by two marked State Police cruisers whose commanders were loyal to the Attorney General, not Bradley Miller.
We put Leo into the secure transport with Christopher Ward and two pediatric trauma nurses from the university hospital who had been flown in on my private helicopter.
"Take him to the private clinic in North Shore," I instructed Christopher. "Full neurological scan. Complete facial reconstruction consultation with the best pediatric plastic surgeon on the continent. I want him in a private suite with twenty-four-hour Aegis guards on every door."
"And where are you going, Elena?" Christopher asked, looking at my tactical uniform and the unyielding fire in my eyes.
May you like
"The Riverdale Autumn Charity Gala," I replied, pulling off the tactical vest to reveal an elegant, high-necked black silk jumpsuit beneath. "My mother and sister are still waiting for their grand entrance. It would be rude to keep society waiting."
