Chapter 2 - Dissecting the Syndicate

By 4:00 AM, Clara’s vital signs had stabilized, though she remained in a medically induced coma. The lead surgeon, a renowned specialist whom my team had flown in via private helicopter from Johns Hopkins two hours prior, stepped out of her room with a quiet nod.

"The internal bleeding is controlled, Mr. Vance—pardon me, Mr. Sterling," the doctor corrected himself, knowing my true identity. "Her body has taken immense trauma, but she is strong. Physically, she will recover in time. Visually, the scars will fade. But emotionally..." He sighed heavily. "The loss of the child will leave a deep wound. Be ready for that."

"I am ready for anything," I said. "Keep four of your best nurses in her room at all times. My men are guarding the floor."

Leaving two dozen heavily armed operatives scattered throughout the hospital under the guise of private security contractors, I stepped into the elevator and descended to the basement parking garage.

A black armored SUV was waiting. I slipped into the back seat, where Marcus was surrounded by four glowing monitors.

"Report," I ordered as the vehicle pulled out into the rain-slicked city streets.

"Arthur Vance’s enterprise is already sixty percent dismantled," Marcus said, tapping his keys rapidly. "When we froze their assets at midnight, their secondary creditors panicked. We’ve bought up eighty-five percent of their corporate debt through our shell company in Zurich. By sunrise, you will legally own every brick of the Vance Logistics empire, including their homes, their vehicles, their warehouses, and their offshore holdings."

"What about their political shields?" I asked, looking out the tinted window as the city lights blurred past.

"Senator Vance—Arthur’s cousin—tried to intervene at 2:00 AM," Marcus chuckled dryly. "He called the State Attorney General demanding an immediate investigation into the freezing of his family's accounts. I personally called the Senator thirty minutes ago and played a five-second audio recording of his 2022 meeting with the cartel representatives in Miami. He has since announced his immediate resignation from public office due to 'health reasons' and is currently packing a bag for a country without an extradition treaty."

"Good. What about the physical enterprise?"

Marcus’s expression turned grim. "That’s where it gets complicated, Boss. Arthur Vance didn't act alone tonight."

I turned my gaze slowly toward Marcus. "Explain."

Marcus flipped a monitor toward me, showing a series of encrypted text messages and wire transfer receipts recovered from Arthur’s phone.

"Arthur is a greedy idiot, but he was always terrified of you, even when he thought you were just a wealthy shipping merchant," Marcus explained. "He wouldn't have dared assault Clara for her trust fund unless someone gave him a guarantee of total protection. Look at these transactions."

I scanned the numbers. Three days ago, a sum of fifty million dollars was transferred into Arthur’s offshore account in Panama. The origin of the transfer was masked behind seven layers of proxy banks, but the ultimate source bore an unmistakable signature: an encrypted cryptographic hash used exclusively by the Romanov Syndicate.

My eyes narrowed into slits. "Dimitri Romanov."

"Yes," Marcus confirmed. "Dimitri has been trying to take over the East Coast port routes for five years. He knew you were retired, but he also knew that as long as you were alive and wealthy, you were an obstacle. He paid Arthur to break Clara—not just to get her trust fund, but to draw you out of hiding or break your spirit so completely that you’d abandon the shipping routes."

A terrible, icy laughter welled up deep in my chest.

Dimitri Romanov thought he was playing grandmaster chess. He thought he could use Clara’s abusive family as a pawn to test my strength. He didn't realize that in trying to test my strength, he had removed the only chain that was keeping me from burning his entire world to the ground.

"Where is Dimitri?" I asked.

"He’s currently at his private estate in the Hamptons, believing that Arthur Vance is handling the 'aftermath' of the assault," Marcus said. "He has thirty private mercenaries guarding the property."

"Thirty?" I scoffed. "Call Viktor. Tell him to take twenty men. I don't want a siege, Marcus. I want a ghost operation. I want Dimitri brought to Dock 4 before the sun rises."

"And Arthur’s sons?"

May you like

"Leave them in the dark for a little longer," I said, looking at my hands. "Let them listen to the sound of the ocean rustling against the hull of the warehouse. Let them realize that no amount of money or family name can save them now."

The SUV accelerated through the dark streets, cutting through the fog like a phantom ship moving toward its prey.
