Chapter 2 - The Forensic TrapWhile Noah fought for his health in the NICU, the net was tightening around my family.

For three years, while working as a senior forensic accountant, I had quietly managed our family’s finances. When my father claimed his contracting business was failing, I paid his property taxes. When Lauren accumulated twenty thousand dollars in secret credit card debt, I negotiated her settlements. When my mother needed medical care, I funded it.

They believed my kindness was an open bank account. What they didn't know was that every wire transfer, every loan, and every property title had been logged, audited, and cross-referenced through my firm’s database.

Three days after the incident, Detective Ruiz returned to my hospital room, accompanied by a federal prosecutor named Marcus Vance.

“Miss Bennett,” Marcus greeted me, shaking my hand gently. “I’m with the state financial crimes division. Detective Ruiz briefed me on your background as an auditor, and frankly, what you uncovered in your family’s ledgers makes our job remarkably easy.”

I gestured to the laptop on my bedside table.

“Open the encrypted folder labeled ‘Bennett Family Trust’,” I instructed, my voice steady. “You’ll find three years of fraudulent tax filings submitted under my father’s business name, listing fictitious employees to collect state subsidies. You’ll also find documentation proving that the house my parents live in—the one they claim they own outright—was actually purchased using embezzled pension funds from the community center where my mother served as treasurer.”

Marcus’s eyes widened as he scrolled through the documents. “Good grief. This isn't just family drama. This is systematic white-collar fraud.”

“And it gets better,” I added. “Lauren’s baby shower wasn't funded by her fiancé’s family. It was funded by an unauthorized line of credit opened in my name using my Social Security number, which my mother had access to when she handled my college paperwork.”

Marcus looked up from the screen, a grim smile touching his lips. “They didn't just assault you, Emily. They committed grand larceny, identity theft, and tax evasion. Warrants are already being drafted for your parents’ arrest. And as for your sister and her fiancé—we’re freezing all their joint accounts by sunset.”
