Chapter 3 - Arrest at the Country ClubTwo weeks after the attack, the sun was shining brightly over the Oakridge Country Club, where Lauren was hosting a post-baby shower luncheon with her remaining friends, eager to play the victim and milk the sympathy of high-society acquaintances.

She wore a designer maternity dress, sipping sparkling cider, telling anyone who would listen that I had “a psychotic break due to pregnancy hormones” and threw myself into the pool to ruin her special day.

The double doors of the country club ballroom swung open.

They didn't come in quietly.

Four uniformed state troopers, led by Detective Ruiz and Marcus Vance, walked straight across the polished parquet floor. The ambient chatter of sixty guests died instantly.

Lauren lowered her glass, her face flushing with indignant rage. “Excuse me! This is a private event! How dare you—!”

“Mrs. Lauren Vance-Smith,” Detective Ruiz announced, his voice carrying clearly across the room as he pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit financial fraud, identity theft, and accessory to aggravated assault.”

“Accessory to what?!” Lauren shrieked, standing up so fast her chair overturned with a loud crash. “Are you insane?! My mother pushed her! I didn't touch her!”

“You laughed while she was drowning, Lauren,” a cold, firm voice echoed from the entrance.

The crowd parted.

I stood in the doorway. I was pale, leaning slightly on a cane for support, but my eyes were blazing with unshakeable strength. Behind me rolled an incubator carrying my son, Noah, who had finally been discharged from the NICU that morning, strong enough to come home with his mother.

Lauren stared at me as if she were looking at a ghost. “Emily... you’re... you’re supposed to be in bed!”

“I was busy signing arrest warrants, sister dearest,” I replied calmly, walking further into the room.

At that exact moment, outside in the parking lot, flashing police cruisers surrounded my parents’ luxury sedan. My mother was screaming hysterically as officers slapped handcuffs onto her wrists, while my father sat slumped in the passenger seat, realizing that thirty years of financial deception had finally caught up to them.

Lauren burst into panicked tears, looking around the room for support, but every single guest had stepped away from her, whispering in shock as the reality of her family’s true nature was laid bare.
